Hey, has anyone used one of those Blast Match fire starters with the built in magnesium rod and flint? I wonder if we could get them to make one that will fit into a large Shadow or Project knife since it is basically cylindrical?

Hi Monster,
I don't have an answer to offer you on this one but you might want to try posting this also over at the "Wilderness & Survival Skills" forum.

Those guys over there really know there stuff!!

Yup! Raptor I do believe you are right, I'll leave it here for a while though and see what pops up.

Monster, I think those are too big to fit. But I have found what you are looking for. Robert Withrow is a survival instructor in Utah, and designed the "Mag Stryker System" just for hollow handles. It is a ferrocium rod with magnesium housing that fits in the buttcap. Here's the address:

Drop him a note, and he'll send the info.

I've got a blast match and they are too big to fit in any knife handle I've ever seen. They really do make a real shower of sparks though.

The BlastMatch is designed so it could be used easily with one hand. If a solid surface to press down on is not available then the back of a knife blade could be used to send sparks on tinder without disturbing the pile.

Howevere, if you will go to http://www.equipped.com/devices28.htm#Sparks

You'll find some info on a much smaller flint sparker that is reviewed quite well on that site. Its not quite the spark maker that the BlastMatch is but it should do the job just the same.

Hey Monster....

Welcome to the forums..

I'm sure that the Goderator

will move this thread over any time soon...

To be Quite honest with you, and I don't mean to be rude or anything,,,,but the Blast Match is a piece of $hit...

You'd be far,,far better off to take a hammer to the plastic and extract the Ferro rod out of the center.Kile A Kinder egg of sorts...

Using the Blast Match the way it was designed to be used,, would mean you would have to put it in contact with your tinder bundle, whatever that may be.

A tinder bundle being a Very fragile thing to begin with, you would not want to distrub it.

Throwing a spark onto the bundle is a far better thing.

I have one of these myself, but it is primarily used as a teaching device and an example of yet another type of firestarter...

The blast match also has no magnesium in it,,it is pure Ferrocerium with a steel insert used as a striker.

One thing I will say for the blast match..It certainly does throw a shower of sparks...

Contact Bagerra over the on the Wilderness forum..He can set you up with a Swedish Steel that is the Absolute Best made anywhere. It's All you will ever need.

Hope this helps..

hey, take a look at some of the threads on handles and sheaths at the Creeves forum and the survival forum. I posted some info about www.equipped.org that has a full review on mini and personal survial kits. DOne Right Mfg makes a magnesium rod with a small flint attached. more than what's needed to get tinder burning, about 2.5" long, .5" wide. more than small enough to fit in a knife handle...

toast

Coughlan's or Doan sells a ferrocerium/magnesium flint that may fit or may be made to fit. They sell for around $5 at most sporting goods/camping stores. Also, the Boy Scouts sell a flint striker called the Hot Spark that would probably do for around $2 at BS stores.

Hope that helps.

So would a quality flint or steel and some cotton balls be sufficeint in getting a fire started in an emergency....or would the magnesium or ferrocium bar be a better idea? Hell I just make it a point to carry alot of water proof matches, but it never hurts to have back up.

I think that is "bagheera".

Cotton balls in vaseline and a ferrocium rod (pref with striking steel, say from a broken hacksaw to save unsightly marks on your knife) is the way to go. Magnesium takes far too long to prepare. You have to make quite a pile of shavings for it to work.

You can go for the full sized stick found in the Blastmatch, but it would be more economical to find the thinner rods. I can't remember all the manufacturers, but I think a quick search in the wilderness forum will bring up a few threads with the links in them. Found a few though: Gotfire, MDPoff's links page and another retailer.

As for the Blastmatch itself, I think it works fine. Certainly, I find that the striking action is a lot less destructive to the tinder pile than a freehand rod and striker; better than the Gerber Strike Force anyways.

Get one of the Doan magnesium and ferro rods and then take the rod off of the magnesium. Go to Radio Shack and get some shring tubing and put it on the ferro. rod. This is what I have inside of my Reeve Tants1 handle. When you need it just peel back or shave off the shrink tubing and make the sparks with your knife or some other piece of sharp metal (I use a piece of planer blade)

The shrink tubing keeps the rod from clanking or breaking while in the handle. You can also stuff some cotton balls inside also and carry a small tube of Vasoline for your tinder.
