Many of you already know how to do this. For those of you that don't, I'll let you think on it for a little bit and I'll describe how it's done here in a few days. Let's see how many of you can figure out how to make this, that already don't know how.

It's a cross pendent that Tom and I made in his shop this past Thursday night. I put it with a nice silver chain and gave it to my wife. She likes it quite a lot.

A hint on how to make it. The starting piece of damascus was .288" x .288" x 3". Basically a .288" damascus keystock 3" long.

Tom told me the name of it, but I can't for the life of me remember what the name is.

p.s.
Thanks Tom!!!

Okay....134 looks and no comments.

soooooooooooooooo.....How many of you already know how to make one of these?

Don't know.....show me, show me, show me, show me!!!!

Thanks,
Chris D.:D

the hole does resemble a phillips head bit. did you use a phillips screw to support the damascus while you punched through with a bit or did you drive the damascus down onto an inverted bit while it was held in a vice? it looks neat anyways.

had a great time Scott, lets do it again some time:thumbup:
its not punched or upset(if i understand the term correctly)

First hint...

Tools required:
  • Grinder
  • hacksaw
  • forge
  • hammer and anvil

Those tools are used in that order for the first four steps.

:p

Hey, nice piece of work. Really like it. Tom We need to get together in a while. Work has gone back to normal, but, I was sick as a dog this week. Miserable. I have a trip to go on the middle of the moth. Hows stuff look like after that. I am going to have a booth at the tulip festival again this year in middle of April. But lets make it happen

The only way that I can see that this could be made is by bending the metal over on itself at the desired spot.Cut a split right in the bend with the hacksaw. Then straighten out the bend, chunk it in the forge till hot enough.
Pull it out and stand it on end and lightly tap on the top side and hope that the arms of the cross start spreading out left and right.
Am i close?

trying to remember,,,(smell the smoke?),,, somehow you slit the bar from the top and then from the perpendicular side up,,, then "unfold" so to speak,,, let me think about it,,,

Yep, you got it.

It's far, far harder to explain than show.

But if you can imagine this...

You start with a rectangle. Say, to make the numbers easy, 1"x1"x3".

So you split it by running the 1" face against the blade, and cutting 3/4 of the way to the other end.

Then you split it by putting the other 1" face against the blade, but first you turn it 90 degrees. So the two cuts don't, meet, but they cross.

Ok see? Far harder to explain than show. Let's see if I can show this in MS Paint :D.

Very cool Scott. Tom is eager to show people his tricks.

BTW: Tom, that drop point we forged is ready for heat treat. I stretched the handle a bit before cleaning her up. After much deliberation, I've settled on a handle style. I'll post pic's when it's done.

when your feeling up to it call and we'll set a date Jim.
looking forward to seeing what you did with the drop point Brook.

I knew how to do these, dang I just find the thread now......

Very cool in damascus Scott, It looks so small I thought Stacy made it!

Tom gets all the credit for that necklace. He and I each did half the work on the one in the photo, but Tom had made a number of them before he introduced me to them. Tom had seen them and then found it on the internet and taught himself how to make them from the information he had researched. I'm just a very lucky student!!

They are definitely cool!

Great looking necklace. Hey Tom can you post a link to where you found a tutorial on the net?
