What tool/technique does this?

I am using some old crappy knives as a first time handle making project. I want to use wood as I have access to some beautiful timber. I want the tang to be hidden completely inside the handle.

I watched a bazillion YouTube's and they all use two sides glued together.

I love purely shaped objects and hate anything glued, molded, poured or built up (layered). I know these methods make a better result - I am not caring about the better result, this is a personal project only.

Given all that I want to cut a long slot directly into the wooden handle for the tang to be inserted to its full depth e.g. 4 inches. I tried a narrow long chisel but could not get more than a few inches without creating a horrific crater. A friend suggested a router but I can't see that working and I don't own one.

So what tool cuts a deep narrow slot the thickness and width of a knife tang into wood??

Prefer hand tool if possible.

The old way is to burn it in. Another way is to drill a hole then thread one of those cable survival saw through it.

you will probably need to epoxy it in place but it won’t show.

A "square" dril like these? (don't know the english word for them)

Don't know if they exist in the 4" length you want.

Those are called Mortise Drills. :) I think they could possibly work, but the burning is a pretty slick way to go.
