What Traditional knife did you give away today?

I see various posts about knives we have gifted to people, both strangers and friends. I thought today we needed a spot just to show or talk about those knives. This isn’t for knives handed out on hosted GAW’s, merely your generosity towards another person. Feel free to post about something in the past or even something planned for the future.

So here goes....Tomorrow I’ll give this knife to a co-worker I supervise. Her son just made Eagle Scout and thought this would be a fitting congratulations. I received it on one of @abbydaddy annual GAW’s, but thought it’d be a good one to pass on.

I gave a blue peanut in stainless to a buddy who converted a 4-speed Sturmey Dynahub to five speeds, built a wheel around it, and helped me set it up on my Raleigh DL-1.

I gave a NIB bullnose to a good friend and former college roommate. He’s a knife guy and even makes his own knives, but he was not really into traditionals. The bullnose might be his gateway drug.

Gave another bullnose to my brother in law, who is a farmer. I hand wrote a note to go along with it talking about the sod buster pattern and it’s history with those who work the land.

And I gave an alox pioneer to the guitar player in a band I was playing with last year. He kept borrowing my knives and using the main blade to turn screws on gear. Finally I gave him an SAK to throw in his guitar case, mostly just because I was worried about my own knives.

I gave a Case medium Stockman to a co-worker who's never had or carried a pocket knife. He is from the city (in New Jersey) and moved down south to
Georgia to transfer to a better work position. He joked about how when cutting things, he automatically reaches into a desk drawer for scissors, while I reach into my pocket for a pocket knife. After going on 50 years of daily pocket knife carry, the idea of using scissors is actually alien to me, and I've learned how to do a lot of different cutting tasks easily and precisely with my pocket knife. (It drives my wife crazy, sometimes!)

So, one day I brought in a selection of 7 various traditionals, Queen and Case, all
new, which I'd found in a pawn shop years ago, and told him to take his pick. I explained the benefits of some of the various blade shapes for different cutting tasks, and he (IMHO) wisely chose the Stockman. Now, he's never seen without it, and will occasionally take it out when I'm around, just to demonstrate that he's still carrying it.... And better yet, he uses it for daily cutting tasks! He's come to see how handy a pocketknife really is, and while he's not gotten the bug to acquire more, I'm delighted that he's now become a member of the "knife culture." :)

Lemmy see ... so far, a Ulster "Official BSA", a Buck 389 Canoe, a SK Blades "Lil Jack', a Opinel No. 7 (to my nephew/godson) a couple Stockman and Barlows, a TL29 type and a vintage/antique Pen knife to a few friends, a couple "modern" folders I didn't care for, a Uncle Henry LB7, and a Multi-tool to my then boss when I drove truck ...
I'm pretty sure there are more that I can't think of off hand. :)
Does the Gerber lockback with a defective (or no) heat treat I gave to the landfill count?

I don't think folks around here give away knives with the intent of tooting their own horns.

Never intended this thread to be about “tooting your own horn”, patting yourself on the back or giving yourself a trophy. We talk about traditional knives we pick up and we see people mention ones they’ve given away, for any reason (even to the landfill:eek:). Just thought it’d be interesting to see what’s going out the door:)

I can't believe I forgot to post this earlier. I have a cousin who is my age (old enough). He was visiting a couple of weeks back. My bright idea was to give him a USA 34OT carbon I got a few years back. It is in great shape. I stropped all the blades and polished and oiled it. Then I thought, hey maybe I should keep it - just kidding.

He's still active, athletic, etc, so I thought he would enjoy it. I asked him what kind of pocket knife he carried, and he replied he doesn't own one. When I offered him the 34, he said "nah, I wouldn't carry or use it, probably lose it". I wish I could have seen the look on my face.

Anyway, that's the tale of how I tried to give away a knife.

The idea of a grown man not carrying a pocket knife is very alien to me. And I know I shouldn't feel this way but I cant help it, when I find out that a man doesn't my opinion of him drops a few degrees. As far as giving away knives I bought a RR moose just to send to my best friend. Awhile ago I also bought an old but pristine Bucklite 422 at a flea market just to send him. He had one when we was in high school, but lost it and has always said it was his favorite knife. Only difference is his original was o.d. green and the replacement I sent is black. He was extremely happy to receive it. Now that wallyworld has the 110 lite for 20 bucks I plan to buy a few to give away

I have gotten tired of my coworkers carrying or using junky knives that they may have gotten from vendors or at tradeshows. Over the years, I have modded a few knives to give, and have given many Vic Classics away. I've also given a few knives to the guys in my crew.

I'm also the guy that everyone comes to when they need their knife sharpened, LOL.
