What tweener would be your ideal hunting knife?

Hmmmm.. Hunting knives are a right personal choice.....

I am not a big fan of the big knife for hunting.... Not that I have any objection to those that do...but in my world.. A man strapped with a big knife on his hip while hunting was considered a nimrod... I ain't judging others here... Just making a thread....

I am a man of the mid knife... The tweener size... I am, quite honestly, in a quandary... I like the bk 16, cuz I love me some dropped points.... But i also love the bk 17.... cuz it's a more traditional Bowie style than the others... But for skinning...the bk 15 should be the berries....

Oh.. I am not asking which to get.... I have a 16 and a 17... The 15.. Will be next... I am looking for YOUR idea of the best hunting knife....

Your idea may not be mine, and I respect that... Let's hear YOUR opinions....and why... ( and if you like big blades to hunt with..it's cool)... I just want the reason for your choice...

my fpr bk15 wil be my hunting knife. honestly its because i didnt like the steel, thumbramp or blade length on the schrade sharpfinger (love the old ones) so the 15 added a bit to the length and heft an ffg grind which i prefer for skinning carbon steel which holds a better edge and the thumb ramp is gone and replaced with my favorite jimping on a production knife. (not to mention with a little modding you can make it truly yours by doing anything from changing the scales to etching it, even turning it in to a small version of the guarded one that was posted here

of the three, I'd take the 16. For me a hunting knife is one I carry to field dress. The 15 would probably be a great skinner, but I'm not skinning out in the woods, so it would wait at home anyway.

I think the 17 because it's the perfect length for me to use with laser precision (or as close to that as I can get), it also has a pointy profile so it's easier to poke through the skin with.

Daiz.. I get that... I do like a drop point overall.. But I do skin at camp... So I am kinda thinking a 15 would fill that bill...cuz I could gut at point of kill, and use the same knife to skin at camp....

Course.. All of this isn't what I do... I am just looking for other opinions.... And, I am not going to criticize other's style... I just want to know...

Well, I'm on the fence as well. And I know the answer, is all three. Mostly, because I don't actually take 1 knife on involved hunting trips, I bring a few.

My primary hip belt when I'm hunting, has field dress in mind. For deer, I like something with a point, it helps get the guts out from both ends, so, for me, more than likely it will be my BK17. The grind is a little thicker, but for a gut pile maker, that ain't an issue.

Skinning, will be my Dozier K11 or my buddy's (willis) Dozier Master Skinner. For rendering flesh into jerky sizes, we're looking at a BK5 or 15, could go either way.

For small game, my BK17 hands down.

The BK16 I see more as a fieldcraft knife, that I will be using to make my carcass/skinning racks or my hanger. Maybe a buccan to jerk some meat in camp.

The choices are limitless, but I honestly think you could do fine with any of the three.

They are all three a bit larger than perfect for most folks who want a 3.5 to 4 inch blade.

I like 'em a touch bigger than that so I think they are all three just fine. ALL have enough belly and good blade geometry. Pretty much comes down to the points.

I grew up with drop points, but my Stamped LE 17 has been stripped ,convexed and polished. It's also getting Orange and Black Tigerstripe G-10 scales permanently "glued ,screwed and tattooed" with stainless Corby bolts in preparation for hunting season. It will be my primary hunting belt knife for a while.. But the 16 and 15 will get their share of flesh cutting done before it's all over.

I live in a state the size of postage stamp, so the notion of 'camp' is a bit odd when home is never more than 30min away from the legal hunting grounds (and often only 10 minutes away!) But realistically I never catch anything with my deer net anyway, so maybe it's all moot. :D

I'd choose the clip point 17. Mainly because I've always used a Buck 110 and it has functioned very well on all my deer. I'm looking forward to taking my 17 on it's first deer hunt this November.

Of the tweeners, I choose the 17 as my hunting knife. Mostly for aeshetic reasons, but I also like the pointy tip. The extra length and trailing point of the 15 make me think I might inadvertently puncture something I shouldn't while field dressing. The 15 seems to me to be most suited for when the game gets to the kitchen.

But to be honest, my favorite for cleaning game is the Eskabar. I prefer the shorter blade especially with game smaller than deer, which gets cleaned more often than deer.

Going dove hunting this weekend with willis. BK17 will accompany me.

Or maybe my Dozier, haven't decided yet.

That is all.

For deer, I plan on using the BK15. It's longer than I usually prefer for a hunting knife. I want to give the BK15 a shot, because I believe I can field dress with it (heck I did one with a BM Mini-Grip) and skin with it, making it a one-knife solution. If the BK15 proves to be too long for field dressing comfortably, I'll cheat and go get my ESEE3.

This deer season I'll be bringing my FFG 16 and probably a folder with me. I thought about clipping my 16 like K9 because that was one nice looking knife (sorry K9 don't mean to rub salt in the wound) but I think I want to leave the coating on it because there is a good chance it will get rained/snowed on this season and I like the extra layer of protection. At least this is my plan. If I get bored some weekend I might take it to the grinder.
