It came with a bunch of tools I received, 8x2x1", coarse and fine. The color is brick red and it looks to have some white specks in it, any ideas?

If you tried to post a photo, it didn't come thru. Otherwise I don't know about the stone. DM

Sorry, here are the pics. The white flecks are in the stone, more noticeable on the fine side than the coarse.

I don't know. Without the specks I'd say a Norton India stone. It could be a man made stone. Not a natural stone. i.e. Arkansas. DM

Whatever the make, it looks like a good stone to try, probably aluminum oxide with titanium oxide to give it that reddish color? I'd use it with some oil.

The flecks might be left over glass material from the initial firing, do you have any sort of loupe or microscope? Sometimes they are marked on the sides.

Definitely NOT a Norton India. Definitely man made. Looks like a Chinese silicon carbide stone (with some impurities). Will most probably give you a very "toothy" edge. I would use it for garden tools but not fine edges.

red silicon carbide? I think thats just chinese dirt (aluminum oxide) ... and they're great for "fine edges" and garden tools
I use one from dollartree for all my kitchen knives
