Hi Guys, I am new to this and up to this point I have done a lot of reading and gathering of info but now I have a question. I came across a package of power hacksaw blades and I am wondering if anyone knows what type of steel it may be and how to soften it for working on, and then heat treat when finished to achieve a good working edge? The blade is marked as: "Simonds High Speed Molybdenum Power Hack Saw Blade 0.060" Blade Number 2117506" I am grateful for any help provided. Thanks, Kevin

You could contact Simonds and ask what the steel is, if they tell you then it should be easy to find out how to heat treat it

That's high speed steel. Not the best choice for blades, difficult to soften and impossible to HT without top equipment.

Simonds Hack Saw blades is Hight Speed Steel. I would not use it for a knife blade. :thumbdn:
If I was you get some books on knife making and see what other knife maker's are using. :D

Check out my site below I have links to steel that would be for what you are wanting to do. And by the way wecome to Bladeforums.
You will find great knife makers in here from all walks of life. Have a blessed day in what-ever you do in life. :)

Thanks for the advice. I figured because I got a bunch for a good price it was a bargain. Guess not. I do have some 01 which I will continue to play with though. Again Thanks.

I'm gonna be the dissenter here, but M2/M4 HSS makes wonderful knives! " IF " you can get past the steels toughness, meaning it will be a bear to work. But once done, stays sharp. .60 is a lil thin for a fixed blade user. I'd want the .9375 - .100 models to make pretty sharp pointies out of. but not bad for a small folder. Run away if it says "Bi Metal" it's junk steel with M2/M4 HSS teeth welded on (which might actually make a good wharnecliff IF you dont grind past the HSS now that i think about it.!) a bench grinder is what i'd use to shape, as it'll eat most belts for breakfast
