What type of axe is this?

Came across this axe at a flea market. The seller said he made it but I don't know. He didn't seem to be able to answer my questiions. There is an "M" with a circle around it as a makers mark and a temper ping below the head on the handle. Don't know if it is a tactical axe or what. Maybe it is supposed to be wrapped in paracord. He said it was great for camping and dragging brush out of the woods. I suppose if he said he was digging roots with it I could see the axe doing that as well. Any ideas on this work? It's out of stainless and rings good when you ping it. Since I was posting pictures earlier I thought I would use a hatchet as a reference for size.

Looks pretty tactical to me. But no idea on the maker. Maybe it was a custom one of a kind job? If you decide you don't like it let me know I would be interested in it.

It does look tactical to me as well. The blade was not very sharp. I haven't put an edge on it. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Looks naked. No lanyard, but it has a hole for one. No wrap around the handle. Like a skeleton with no meat. Has some potential for various uses.

wrap that handle with some nice blaze orange paracord and put a edge on the blade! nice hawk

If it was mine I would add some black/od green micarta scales/handle and a blued finish. What is the length of the axe edge/spike and the handle?
If I was gonna do a paracord wrap it would be black, or od green.

The total length from top to bottom is 17.5 inches. Spike to center of blade is 7 inches. Spike is2 3/4 long and 1 inch wide at base. Blade 2 1/4 wide 3 inches long. Total thickness 1/4 inch stainless. Handle tapers from head at 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 at base. Top slot is 5 inches long, bottom is 5 1/2. Balance is 1 inches below beginning of top handle slot. Seems uniform doesn't it. Never measured it before. Interesting. Wonder how it will take and edge.

Thanks for the dimensions. Looks very nice.

The hardness test dimple is a good sign...

I think you could probably put some nice wood or micarta scales on that.

Ringing doesn't mean anything except that there isn't a crack in it somewhere. In fact, a fellow did a test a while back with tempered and annealed steels. The tempered steels actually didn't ring as nicely as the annealed (fully soft) stuff did...

it reminds me of a crash axe in its simplicity. obviously weight was an issue or the handle would have been left solid. its not a heavy use chooper or the blade would be longer. i see it as a crash axe. an escape and survival tool. if you dont know what one is google it. its pretty damn cool. used to escape from a downed, aluminum hulled plane. very simple, just as this one is.

Junk! Throw it out! Better yet...send it to me so I can dispose of it in a responsible manner! :D

I thought I saw that "O" stamp on a small necker somewhere around here. Would that likely be the makers forge stamp?

RMJ makes a damned fine hawk. Definitely a tactical tomahawk.... micarta or a good paracord wrap and she'll be ready to throw.

Not close to the same size except maybe the length of the handle. The head and spike are both a lot larger on the RMJ Forge tomahawks. Also the tomahawk the OP shows in the first picture is made from stainless steel, the RMJ hawks use 4140 Chrome-Moly steel. Here is a link to the specs for the Talon the, hawk in the top of the 2nd picture. http://www.rmjforge.com/talon_specifications.htm

Very interesting, thanks for the post. Maybe someone was trying to copy that.

Nice score ! I agree a wrap or some scales on it would be nice....

its the same shape as the firemans axe i was issued with in 1985 by NSWFB. it has a thick rubber handle -to insulate against electrical shock- they are based on naval boarding axes from the 1700s.
