I don’t need/want a perfect hamon.. also iv never done it before. Is there anything around the house that i can use for 1095 steel, without having to buy something.? Charcoal slurry, wall putty, i might have a little plistix powder, regular garden clay/mud?

Furnace cement works, if you've got it...

I just did a quick Google search for "hamon clay recipe" and the first thing to pop up said it's a 1:1:1 ratio of clay, powdered stone and charcoal.

All you really need is something that retains heat and doesn't pop off during the quench.

Lots of folks use a refractory clay like Satanite.

You can buy a small amount of satanite for less than $10 and save yourself $100 worth of aggravation

It’s probably worth it.

yeah this hobby/obsession is bleeding me. I made a promise not to buy a single thing more for a while.

Satanite is the best low cost clay. NuClayer is better ( but not all that much), but quite pricy.

Much more important than the clay is how it is applied and how the HT and quench are done.

The plistix would probably work.

Garden clay might work, but there will be a lot of testing there.
I would see if there's someone near you who has done some hamons in the past who would be willing to help and provide a knife worth of clay
