I was curious to know exactly what they call the blade grind on a Ratweiler. I know it isn;t a full flat grind because it doesn't go all the way to the to the spine, so what is it? Also, what are the pros and cons of this type of grind? Personally I am very much drawn to the looks of it and I have been wondering if that may have been the reason it was done that way...simple cosmetic appeal??

I believe it's what people refer to as a Saber Grind. The main bevel goes up from the edge, it just doesn't go up all the way to the spine. The Ratweiler appears to be a 3/4 Saber, meaning about 1/4 of the top portion is left the original stock width.

It does look good, but it also allows the blade to remain stronger along the spine area than when taking the metal off. Also, the different grinds are used to adjust the balance of the knife, and this one helps keep some weight out in front of the handle, which in turn aids in chopping ability.

It's definitely a saber grind. It has a convex ground edge, but the blade itself is a saber grind. No rats have ever had a convex grind to them, but they all have a convex edge.

If only Porkerson could convince Jerry crank out an INFI Weiler with a full height flat grind and a zero edge..

:D
