i noticed they sell steel at tractor supply and sutherlands but its called welding steel.does anyone know what type of steel this is? can you make a decent knife blade from this?

No. It's mild steel, and just dosent have enough of the
carbon or other stuff, like manganese, to make it
hardenable enough for a blade.

My best bet was to order online. Also, if you have a Fastenall around you, they usually stock some steel. Otherwise, check the phone book for steel suppliers and see if they have anything suitable.
