I have several 60'' saw blades, some are solid tooth, some are inserted tooth.Could someone tell me what type of steel most of these are made of,also need to know how to temper for knife blades

The answer is..... "some kind of steel".

You have no idea what it is unless you can contact the manufacturer with an exact stock number and get the info from them. The inserted teeth blades are almost definitely not usable. The solid tooth blades may be any number of alloys, some OK and some not. The point is - you just don't know. You could sell those as shop decorations and buy a years worth of good KNOWN steel for about $50-100.

Yes Mace has here has acquired some great 1095 and another guy has some 5160. For around a $100 bucks you can have enough excellent steel for many knives and that includes shipping. A lot of work goes into a good knife, Why do it with maybe steel?

I contacted the manufacture of my inserted tooth saw blades.I dont know much about types of steel so maybe someone can help. They said the steel was SKS5, which means nothing to me. They said it was 8% carbon and 1%nickel,just wondering can this be tempered for a knife blade.
Thanks

According to Korea Specialty Steel's website, SKS5's AISI designation is L-6. Lots of makers have used L-6 with success. Do a search for heat treating L-6. Should be plenty of useful info out there.

Actually, I looked it up on the website you suggested and it seemd to me that it cross referenced to O7, not L6. L6 is one column away and they designate L6 as SKS51.

Here are the specs on O7 (Notice that the carbon is no where near 8%!) I think that the original poster probably meant .8% carbon, which also isn't accurate, but a lot closer.

Element Weight %
C 1.10-1.30
Mn 1.00
Si 0.60
Cr 0.35-0.85
Ni 0.30
Mo 0.30
W 1.00-2.00
V 0.40
Cu 0.25
P 0.03
S 0.03

Watch out for "equivalents" !! They often mean "closest to" ! SKS5 -C .75-.85, Si .35max, Mn .50max, Ni .70-1.30, Cr.20-.50 . O-7 is a very different steel !! Yes it would make a good blade ,a good chopper with the high nickel .
