im a little overwhelmed at all the choices of thread on tandy...what type of affordable thread do you recommend for stitching simple, sturdy sheaths from 8oz leather?

anyone have an answer for what store sells the most affordable 8oz veg tanned leather?

This is off topic from the original post.....but the most affordable (read least expensive) leather is probably the most expensive you can possibly use.

Anything made with cheap leather be it import or domestic will probably wind up looking like crap when finished.

Buy USA tanned, USA Hides from a USA Tannery and you will pay a little more per foot, but it will dye, and oil satisfactorily, have good body, not stretch when tooled, and turn into a product you will be proud of.

I use Wickett and Craig Tannery leather and it is great.

Linen Thread - 5 cord left or right hand twist is a good all purpose thread:
Campbell-Bosworth: http://campbell-bosworth.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=linen - I have not used the less expensive Hungarian thread myself but reports that I have received from others who have state that it just fine and costs half as much as the Barbour's
They may seem expensive up front but the one pound rolls are in fact much cheaper - the small rolls sold by Tandy and others work out to about $250.00 for the same amount as the one pound rolls sold by C-B

Leather - like Paul said - Wickett & Craig 1-800-826-6379
To try it out - They currently have their 8/10oz tooling shoulders (avg 14 sq ft) on sale for $50.00 plus S/H

Twist has no real bearing when handsewing there are some old timers who will disagree but I've used both and when properly waxed both work fine. Used with a machine it's a different story....
