Anybody else watching an auction with a c1970 110 new & mint in two piece box?

I've come to the conclusion that it's a Fourth Version, Variation One (based simply on the pictures available).

Anybody else been pondering this one?

I have one very similar, except it has been used and the sheath is long gone. With the box, paperwork and unused condition, I too expect this to go over $100. I remember when you could walk into any sporting goods store or hardware store and get one of these. Just the standard issue back then.

Can't tell if this one has the brass spacer or the steel spacer (mine has the brass spacer).

I'm betting steel spacer. The shape of the bolsters just seems reminiscent of the later variations.

Where the rear bolster meets the wood by the lock depression shows us a wider wedge of brass than the Third Versions.

And, of course, I'm guessing.

Where's Dave 110? He said he was packing a couple days ago, maybe he's gone tonight.

:)

That rocker pin looks like brass with head on my monitor.
Any significance to that?

Maybe it's a trick?

Actually, I think those orange things were liable to pop anywhere for years.

now I,m looking at those butt rivets...hmmmmmm...
this has been very educational to me... by looking at all those little details and comparing to Joe's notes I'm seeing what those little differences are.
Thanx for the brain teaser BG.

You're welcome.....I enjoy it as well.

The 110s of that era are so complex that they actually ARE like brain teasers.

Nice knives, too.

Butt rivets are hard to see in the pics. I think I see two on the left side and I haven't been able to make anything out on the right.

Some butt rivets are so hard to see that they can actually elude detection even in person.

Sometimes you have to rub the bolster on something to create heat and then breathe on the bolster to get a faint impression of the rivet.

Lets see if we can sneak up on the answer. The 2 line stamp says it was made between about 1967-1972-ish. The Use and Care is either the one I refer to as "undated" or the next one that is dated 4-4-72. If you can find out what the handleing fee is that is shown on this leaflet, that will help. The undated one shows $2 and the 4-4-72 shows $3. If its $3, we know the knife was made very close to the time in 1972 that Buck started stamping model numbers on the blade. We know the undated one was used in part of 72 but we dont know when it was first printed.
Oh, that wasnt the question asked by the OP? Yeah I'm thinking it is a 4th Version, Variation 1. :D

Sounds good, Joe.

That "Care and Use" info is useful information.

I'll have to copy and paste it......thanks. A little bit here, a little bit there......

:)

In case anybody is thinking of bidding on this, I'm not so sure that it's so perfectly new.

Seems to me that there's some wear at the kick near the blade edge......like from hitting a stone while sharpening.

The tip of the blade looks a tiny bit blunt......not quite perfectly crisply defined and pointy-looking.

Maybe they came that way from the factory, but it bothers me just a little. When they say new I like it to look that way.

Nice, but.......?

I'm not bidding on it anyway, it's presented quite well in the auction so it's unlikely it will go at a bargain price. I'll keep looking for one that's a little more of a mystery and has a poor write-up.
