Hi all,

I'm fairly certain Hannibal's knife in the film

of the same namme was a Spyderco Harpy. Or was it a

civilian? Second question, any chance of a black finish

on the Harpy or soon to be Harpy plainedge?

Thanks , grinder out.

Harpy Plain Edge- Yes it is coming

Black Finish on Harpy- closest you will get is a Merlin, or a G-10 Harpy(G-10 Harpies are hard to find)

Are you certain it was plain edged in the movie? It was only visible for such a short time, I never seemed to get a good look at it.

Anyway, in the book he definitely used a serrated Harpy.

I can only comment on the book, I haven't seen the movie yet. (oh be quiet)

He had a Harpy in the beginning, but then went to a knife show towards the end and bought a Civilian.

There ya go.

Yes it was PE!

Go to the Spyderco Gen Info Forum at www.spyderco.com and run a forum search on Hannibal there were a couple debates on what kind it was.

This is my last post in this thread seeing as how I do not want to get into a debate over what knife was used to slice someone's throat and stomach.

kraziekurtis:

No need for a debate.

I was just a little bit surprised to read they used a plain version in the movie. It does not fit the book, and it is a quite rare model. I wonder why they did not go for the regular version.

Maybe someone in the crew just happened to own a plain one.

Perhaps something to do with the clean cuts as opposed to the tears. Kinda fits in with Lecter's character.

Quote: From page 331 of the paperback version.

"Yes, I'll have that Harpy, please, and a straight, serrated Spyderco with a four-inch blade, and that drop-point skinner at the back."

It could very well have been a plain edged harpy in the book. We don't know. As far as I know, he never outright says that it's either one -- if he does, please let me know. Maybe you were reading a German translation that switched it around some?

JamesA:

I did some searching, and this was the part I remembered:

(from the Delacorte Press hardback edition, page 184, chapter 35)

"The knife is called a Harpy and it has a serrated blade shaped like a talon."

That is the one the doctor uses in the parts of the book that take place in Italy.

Of course, the Harpy he buys at the gun show later on might be plain edged, but as far as I remember, that is the last time a Harpy is mentioned in the book; there are no scenes where the new one is actually used after that.

EDITED TO ADD:
Oh, and my book is in English. I have to admit I am somewhat obsessed about reading books in their original language.

As that means I will have to learn dozens of languages for all the books on my to-read list, I should probably try to get rid of that obsession :)

Good stuff. I missed that line.

Just FYI, the quote I mentioned was from Chapter 55.

Yes, I remembered the line in the book that mentions the Harpy is serrated. I don't think it makes a difference that the movie version is plain or serrated, because you can't really see it clearly long enough anyway. If it is plain I'm surprised, because most movies that show Spydies like to show the "menacing serrated versions."

In the book, at the gun show Hannibal not only bought a Civilian, but also "that serrated Spyderco", hinting that he bought a third, unnamed Spydie.

This is too confusing. No, not the different Spydies. I am talking about the two names JamesA and James Y. Hmmm
