What was I thinking buying a Sprint run?

I purchased a Manix 2 CTS from a fellow BF member recently and finally got to play with it last night. I must say that I absolutely love this knife. It is my first Spyderco, and won't be my last, but..........I just keep looking at it thinking to myself "Self, I don't know if I can just bringmyself to use this knife." I bought it to be a user without ever thinking of a knife as a safe queen. I really don't want to start the safe queen crap (no offense to others who have safe queens :D ). I am thinking of doing something drastic, like lightly scoring the blade (just enough to leave a light mark) just so I can get over it.

Anybody else ever have this kind of problem?

nope....I have users and safe queens....If I find one I like that much, I will buy another one to put in the safe.

Just throw it in your pocket with some change/keys for a few days. Get comfortable with it in your pocket. The more comfortable it is for you to carry the knife, the easier it'll be to have it with you when you need to cut something. You shouldn't need to rush out and find something to cut with it, it'll come with time haha.

I've never had that problem myself. I don't believe in safe queens, only in pre-need replacements.

Yeah, its a good idea to keep it pristine so that when you die, your wife's next husband inherits a sweet, NIB sprint run knife instead of one thats all scratched up and covered with drywall dust, printer ink and elk blood.

Joking. Sort of.

Another way to look at it is to remember that the more a knife is used, the happier it is. Sorta like Buzz and Woody in Toy Story. They don't want to sit on the shelf while the other knives have all the fun.

So, you are doing both yourself and your knife a big favor by using it. And you are hosing your wife's next husband in the process. What could be better than that?

Here's how I get over the dilema...I remind myself that eventually someone is probably going to use the knife. Then I ask ask myself if I'm content to be the "caretaker".....or would rather be the one who gets to enjoy using the knife.

- regards

Should have bought two. One for the safe, one for your pocket.

Personally, if I only had one, I'd make it a user regardless of whether it was a limited production or not. I don't really have a problem with safe queens.

It is not the expense that would keep me from using it, just the fact that it is a limited production

That one is from a 1,200 quantity sprint. I believe it is the largest quantity sprint Spyderco has ever done. Are you concerned about this from an investment standpoint? Or that if you lose it, break it, use it up, there will be no more of this particular Manix2?

It would be the latter part, but as much as it killed me, I was able to throw it in the pocket today and carry it around with me. I didn't have use for it today, but it has now officially been carried. I knew I could do it :D .
I was not entirely serious about this. I didn't mean for anyone to actually think I wasn't going to carry it, it was just a mental hurdle I had to overcome.
I must say, from all the pictures I saw online of the Manix 2, I did not imagine it was as big as it was. Man, this thing is a beast!! I love the feel of it in my hand, it just fits so well.

LOL! Best argument, yet!

Love my manix 2 xhp only have one and I beat I up just awesome steel would never be afraid to use this great knife

That knife will never appreciate to more than $200. Not in your lifetime. Use it.

Watch the exchange and see guys flipping the rare Sprints for what, $30-$50 profit tops? After they held on to it for years. Bah

The best part about a limited knife is being able to use the hell out of it, and it will still retain a lot of it's value. Go play.

Not to be morbid but I look at it this way: no one is guaranteed tomorrow, so you might as we have fun and use your knives today - because one day you won't be able to.

Use them and have fun. I accidentally put a big scratch on the blade of my carbon fiber S90V para2. Oh well, at least I'm getting to use it and enjoy it.

You only need safe Queens if you are collecting and someday plan on A. giving it away when your dead, B. She gets half of them in the divorce, C. You sell here for less than you paid for it and I use it, or D. You enjoy the knife that was designed to be used not put in a safe. This is not a limited edition Randall Made knife or another type knife of that type. Use it and have fun with it.

Yes, and I gave away my Gayle Bradley because of it. I gave it to a friend who, while appreciating the fine workmanship and gorgeous design, will have no problem using it to its fullest and really putting the M4 steel through its paces.

This is how I feel. I have doubles of some knives only because I use them and they are no longer in production and want to make sure I can always have them. I don't believe their appreciation in value will ever make it worthwhile to leave them on a shelf but I understand collectors that enjoy doing so with knives that are limited in number. I know people flip them on the market for exorbitant prices but I doubt there are a great many that make a living purely doing that.

People use one of a kind knives all the time. A mass produced production model has limited collector value. It is a lot more useful as a tool than a dust collector.
