When I was around 12 I remember watching survivor man and man vs wild and how I thought Bear Grylls was more hardcore than Less Stroud because he was out there with just a knife and a camera crew while Les Stroud had a bunch of stuff with him.

Anyways I came across this " survival kit " I had put together around that time and it's amusing to see the pretty much worthless crap I put In it and to think I had put it together at all.
I used to fish a lot more at that time than I do now, but theres was no reason I would ever need a survival kit fishing at Negro bar in folsom California. In the middle of the city , it reminds me of Dale Gribble on king of the hill trying to survive in his backyard.

Anyways heres that poor excuse for a survival kit I came across while going through some boxes.

Apparently I thought these used lighter flints ( which have now started to disintegrate btw ) could actually be used to light a fire o_O

Don't feel too bad. :)
One of the purposes of being young is to make mistakes.
You do have a few good things in there. The fishing books and jigs, needle and thread, safety pin, a bit of cord/twine.
A bit of fresh(er) mono fishing line.
You should add a nice scout/camp knife or SAK Huntsman (the saw and scissors come in might handy), and to start a fire, at a minimum a BIC disposable lighter. (I prefer a windproof Zippo type lighter)

Do you recall what happened to the Daisy or Marksman slingshot and break down .45 or .50 caliber blowgun you had back then to get rabbit, flying rats (pigeons) crow, legless reptiles, and squirrel for food with when the fish were (a) not hungry; (b) sleeping; or (c) no less than 25 miles from your location? :)

Adding a knife to a survival kit in my opinion would be a waste of space.
I never leave the house without at least one knife on me and its usually two.
I still have a marksman slingshot around here somewhere ( rather have an original Trumark ), and blowguns are still illegal here in California.

Generally I do know how to better put together a survival kit today, I'm just amused that I actually put one together back the seeing as I had and still have no need for one.
I just dont get out often and when I do its usually just fishing backroad canal or on the riverbank so really never in the wilderness where a survival situation could happen.

Survival kits are kinda ironic. If you don't have it with you at the time you need it?
But I digress.
Don't get me wrong, I'm putting one together now. Every bit of it will fit in a single mag pouch that'll be strapped on the kydex sheath of my bushcraft knife.
I hope to have the rig strapped on me any time I'm out in God's Wild Blue Yonder.

Survival kit 2020:
1. 1 case toilet paper
2. 10 bottles hand sanitizer
3. 1 case N95 masks
4. TV/computer with Netflix account
5. account with food deliver service
For me you'd have to replace the Netflix account with a garage full of tools and plenty of pellets fo my 30+ airguns.
If theres nothing on TV to watch I'm wrenching on something or plinking, that's how I stay sane on a daily basis.

i did similar when I ways younger now I have a few diffrent big walking camping.woods kits one that get used the most is a little molly bag with a dog and human first aid kit spair short dog chain little torch compass twizers magnifier glass sewing kit dog bags what knife i want on the day and a zippo it's how you learn
I'm playing sniper later trying to get some rats with the pellet gun later somthing to do whole locked in the rats having fun in my garden atm there comming out during the day so there must be a few
don't want them comming in the house or my garage

As a kid the scope I had on my air rifle made me feel like a sniper, now here I am 30+ airguns later and only one has a scope on It and it's only because i dont have the peep sight for it yet.

Currently it's a bit warm out back and I have some stuff to do so I haven't been doing much shooting, but it's definitely a great way to stay sane during this whole virus thing.

I like peep sights too the cheap but robust air gun is the webly vmx is blasting the rats atm on iron sights I have a HW 77 mark one 22 that has a iron sight I turned in to a peep.sight and a scope that's a good gun and my favorite and a few others
in your collection do you own a diana model 48 I would love to know what you think befor I buy one

I am guessing the holographic plastic circle was intended as a signaling mirror? Still, far better than the attempt I made back in the late 80's. Because obviously hair gel was going to be the key to life and death. And I'd love to say that's the only stupid inclusion I can recall, but why lie about it now?

I've heard a lot of people say good things about them, but couldn't really say for sure as I don't shoot springers.
I mostly shoot vintage American multi stroke pneumatics and a few American co2 guns.

That's a mirror that got heavily damaged by everything else in the kit.
It might have been damaged before I put it in actually, I'm not sure though.

Even better. Not the worst kit by far
Most off the shelf kits give you some sort of better fire making source than this.
Used lighter flints you can barely hold under normal conditions ?
I'd rather have nothing than have those, because I'd probably waste a lot of time and precious calories trying to start a fire when them when there probably only a 98% chance of that happening.

I will say I only have american co2 guns because there reliable but I mainly own and shoot Springer rifles because that what I used when I was I kid

getting back on topic has anyone else made sheath kits on fixed blade sheath and like them better or pocket kit and a folder for say a day hike or day in the woods
