the night my son was born i engraved 2 knives with both his initials and birthdate. one of the knives(his) is a buck 110 and the other(mine) is a buck 501. i am a bit of a knife nut and wish my dad had done something similar or at least i would like it if he had held on to my first knife and gave it to me when i wasn't a dumb kid who would just give it to some girl i was in love with. so i will hold on to this one for my son and let him use it when he gets a little older but, then i will take it back and hang on to it and give him another knife so he can make it through his "stupid kid years" and have his first knife. i'm a very sentimental kind of guy when it comes to firsts.:)

The first knife was a hand-me-down Kershaw Vapor. He's a southpaw and I noticed him carrying in his left pocket so I got him a Benchmade Barrage and switched it to lefty. Crazy thing was he would pull it from his left pocket and open with his right hand. So I switched it back to right carry for him but he still would put it in his left pocket. So I gave up. :) When the JYDs I went on sale I picked one of those up for him. I was pretty impressed with the little thing.

a couple of months back my son went camping for the first time and I gave him a Vic Spartan. He's only 10, otherwise he would've gotten what he wished for: a mora

^ lol

first knife my nephew used was my wenger standard issue. first folder i bought for him was a mini dozier with orange scales. first fixed blade i bought him was a mora 511 :). all the above stay with me and are only used under my supervision.

Maybe a Gerber LST - not sure, to be honest. We did just find a cool SAK Huntsman that his mom confiscated from him many moons ago for various mischief.

At 5, A Mini-Buck. At 7 , I gave him a Solingen drop point hunter. Now 8 , a couple of weeks ago , a Gerber XDP drop point ,4" blade.. He moves up to Esee's next year. Already learning how to sharpen.

I am a fairly cheap and practical kind of dad so I gave both of my children a cheap $5.00 Swiss Army type knife. I wanted to see if they were going to care for them and to use them properly, and especially not lose them. They were 5 and 7 years old. They demonstrated that they would take care of them and not lose them. I still buy them knives but they are not so cheap anymore. Last one purchased for my now 25 year old BP graduate, an out the front knife MicroTech Scarab. I just love giving them knives.

My 1st knife, given to me by my grandfather was a Kamp King.
I remember closing the blade on my finger and cutting it pretty bad. They did not lock open 40 years ago and pressure the wrong way would close the blade, finger in the way is getting a good "push cut".
I think they took the knife for a while after that.

I think the 1st knife I gave my Daughter was a SAK, but the 1st one I bought for her was an orange G-10 Case tiny Trapper.

Her collection has grown, though. She's 10 & now has:

Case tiny Trapper & Seahorse Whittler (Both in orange G-10).
Case mini Texas toothpick (Red bone) in CV steel.
Kutmaster Girl-Scout Scout slip-joint.
SAK Spartan
Spyderco SS Poliwog, Grasshopper, & Bug.

I know she had some more, but I forget now.

My 2 boys are still young but both are getting a Calvary Sebenza. Ones a small regular and the other a large 21. Also my 2nd boy who was just born is getting the new Busse CABS with his birthdate on the knife, which Busse will put on. They number them anyway but I requested 928.

I "shared" various knives with my kids as they were growing up, and some of them ended up as their permanent possessions. I also gave them some cheap hardware store knives along the way.
The first real gift knives were:

A waved Emerson CQC-7 that I gave my oldest son when he graduated from Marine Boot Camp. (engraved with his name and Eagle Globe, and Anchor) This knife was lost and later replaced by a Mili D2 (lost in Iraq), and again replaced by a Waved Emerson CQC-10. Hasn't lost it YET.

A BM Grip to my second son when he graduated from high school ( and Plan to give him a ZT 550( or 551), as a grad gift from Marine OCS.

A Byrd Robin G-10 to my daughter when she was around 15.
