for me it was working at hans duus in buelton, putting together custom forged light fixtures and painting the faux finishes on them. i got to see a days labor in front of me, and my skill level was important and appreciated. none of the faux finishes were particularly difficult, but i got to do custom match jobs where we'd get a 70 year old light fixture with the instructions "match paint".

it was a shop set up, and while it was never specifically brought up by management, the shop managers i was specifically under were okay with me carrying my busse's akimbo (plus leatherman). it was very nice to not have to change my street clothes to go to work, and being able to carry my 11 pounds of gear with me as i worked.

The one I have right now.

I work as a graphic Designer/signmaker for a Beer distributor. Low pay, but I like the people and the job is easy. Plus, I have internet access. I carry whatever I want- carry a DABA or SJTac daily, in addition to some folders, and my NIP. I also have a Rat Daddy and Battle Rat in my bag, and sometimes a Battle Mistress. I also get to drink beer(usually at the end of the day), and there are three kinds on tap in the conference room. And I have not purchased any beers for a few months.

For five years, I trained Navy students how to run a reactor plant. It was one of the most demanding and satisfying jobs imaginable, although it sucked when I couldn't get one of them to qualify. I took that as a very personal insult. What truly made it great was later visiting carriers/boats as a technical expert and seeing former students. I did initial criticality and core acceptance testing when the Nimitz was refueled. The XO and a number of others were former students. Totally cool.

In general, knives were accepted. Almost everyone carried a multitool or some sheathed folder on their belts. There were some clip knives, but not many. Fixed were rarer than hen's teeth.

Now, I work at a DOE complex and they look askance at anything fixed and folders >3.5". You should have seen their faces when I brought the NICK XXXL in when we cooked a prime rib for Christmas!

Assistant Operations Officer at Coast Guard Group Seattle from 96-99. 12-16 hour days, 5-6 days a week, and 24/7/365 days per year on call. Hundreds of search and rescue, and law enforcement cases, thousands of people helped and millions in property saved, and I would have to say dozens of people saved from death.

Didn't carry a Busse then, but a very satisfying job nonetheless.

i have a freind who works in the big sir area (though he woks in the lower western u.s. region really) as a forest fire fighter. his daily camp involves hiking in the woods and doing distance runs with pack and gear to keep fit... i helped his girlfreind purchase him a leatherman charge wich he carries... if i come into another large sum of money again, i'll be trying to get ahold of a busse for him (a batac if there around at that point :D)

i was always envious of that job... lol, heck, im envious of anyone who gets to work with their hands. data entry is killing me... what i wouldnt give for to be a low paying shop hand at this point....

I think we need a little more elaboration on his type of work. :D

blah blah blah..... i just like my guys having the best tools around...

When I was 22 I worked the summer as a landscaper. The pay was low. It was eight of us and we mowed 1500 acres a week, 90% consisted of about 5 condo retreats at Smith Mountian Lake here in Virginia. Pretty wealthy people with nice cars and lots of pretty girls everywhere, only half of which were snobby. I had the best tan of my life, and with 1500 acres to maintian I was in the best shape of my life, lost I think 5 pounds but looked like I lost 25. Good friends with all the guys I worked with. I always thought if I won the lotto that I go back part time. I could/would have carried a Busse if I would have known about them back then.

Yep, we were surrounded by grass that summer. :D

your work is stunning valleytinworks:D

do you press the sheets at your shop?

i miss being able to do that kind of work... matching paint to an existing scheme is a wonderful thing....

(some of the forged peices i got to paint at has duus :D )

the forging is done iether by hans duus himself, or by armenio, the other blacksmith there. the shop is located in buelton california, about 15 west of solvang, and about 45 minutes to an hour north of santa barbara. i lived in santa maria when i worked there, and i now live in monterey. i really wish i could find a job like that here that would hire me, cabinet making, faux finishing, shop hand, clerical work in a shop, anything thats not in an office building.
