I am planning on attending Mountain Shepard Survival School this summer. The following summer I would love to join up with the Randall Adventure Training Team down in the Amazon! Just curious what experiences you guys have had and what you liked or disliked! :)

Pastorsoup,

What is Mountain Shepard Survival School? I'm developing a wilderness survival leadership training program here in Brazil. I've done it for several years now on an informal basis and am currently looking for ideas. (Rev) Mac

Mountain Shepherd (misspelled in my previous post) is located in the George Washington National Forest in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains near Lynchburg, Virginia. Over 5000-acres of rugged woodland becomes our outdoors classroom. Here is a link to their website if you'd like to check it out. http://www.mountainshepherd.com/

I have been on three different courses. I have taking a BOSS 7 day field course, a Simply Survival course with Greg Davenport, and Just last month I attended a Tom Brown standard course. I really enjoyed them all. I have written reviews of two of them on my website. I'm still in the process of writing my experience at the Tom Brown class.

How about a link to your website. I would love to read the reviews. Where were these activities located?

Pastorsoup,

Mountain Shepherd sounds like a great place to start. Thats a long way from where you live!

I haven't been to any organized schools. According to the proces fothe courses offered I have done multiple thousands of dollars of that kind of training though. A course like that will give you the basic skills needed to do this kind of thing on your own. That's when the real fun begins! Mac

I highly recommend RAT's training in the amazon.I have been with Jeff for the jungle survival training and I would say it is the most intense anywhere you might find in the world. It is the best jungle training anywhere and not only do you learn jungle tactics but you also learn equally important tactics such as interaction with local tribes and city survival.Everyone must remember that at the start and finish of every trip is interaction with locals, its either to get into an adventure or get out of one.The jungle part is easy ,going into an unknown tribe deep in the jungle is downright nerve wreckin. Also the people you work with live what they teach you which makes a big difference, you also can do things you cant in the states such as methods of trapping, tree felling and the such.

Thanks for the feedback Marsupial! My wife is not big on the idea of me heading down for the RAT training, but it just looks awesome. It is two summers away for me. I want to hone my skills this summer, do some winter training, and then get ready for the RAT training. Just checking things out on their website has me really geared up. :D :D
