Please excuse my inexperience, but I am new to sharpening with waterstones. I know different kinds of metal / steel blades are best suited for specific # grits, or so I've heard? I have just purchased a KA-BAR Becker BK2 Campanion and am very happy with it, but I'd like to give it a good sharpen. The blade is 1095 Cro-Van steel if that means anything to anyone and I was wondering what # grit, or combinations of grits the knowledgeable people of this forum would recommend purchasing, and if there is any huge different in brand names?

Any help would be hugely appreciated as I am a bit lost in the new world to me of waterstone sharpening.

This should probably be moved to the MT&E forum, but anyway, Ka-bar 1095 can be sharpened on most any type of stone. For the intended purpose of your BK2, even a fairly coarse finish would probably suit your needs. Therefore, I recommend a $20 Norton combo India stone and a $5 bottle of Lansky honing oil. But if you insist on water stones, then I recommend the King 1000 grit stone, which can be had for $25. :D

Cheers,

Mag

EDIT: Just realized you were in Australia. The prices I quoted were $USD in the United States. Not sure if those products are available in Australia or what they cost there.

Sorry about that, I guess I'll use the excuse that I am new around here and was a bit lost with the layout.

I had never heard of this particular stone before, looks like I could get one for pretty much the same price as a waterstone. This may sound silly, but since I don't have to leave the house for water or pay any extra money out of my own pocket for it despite how minimal the price I'd probably rather work with water than oil, ha ha. Unless and oil stone can be dampened with water?

Cool, I was already looking at a King #1000, but didn't know if it would be suitable or not. I was also looking at these kinds and was wondering if the brands are okay quality. They come with extra #grit stones, but would I end up using them would be the question:
