...A good generic name for the "Axis Lock" type of lock.

You go searching for that specific lock type, and you just can't do it with one search term. Benchmade calls it the Axis Lock, (obviously). Hogue calls it the "Able Lock"...SOG calls it an "Arc-lock"...Boker the "Ambi-Lock"...James Brand the "Ambi-slider". (You get the idea...and I only got as far as the "A's". Who knows what lurks further down....).

If you look for a Frame lock, or liner lock, or slip joint, all possible variations and companies pop up. No weird searching required. So, I propose we need a completely generic term. They can call it anything they want in their literature...but we'll all know what they are talking about!

"Sliding Lock bar"? "Ambidextrous Lock"? "Two finger sliding lock thingy"? I don't care...

(Rant over).

I agree that all the copycats should use a generic term. Only the inventor should benefit from the trade name’s market recognition and respect. This is the very reason that Benchmade trademarked “Axis” when applied to a locking mechanism for folding knives, along with the patent for Axis(tm) lock mechanism itself. It’s the reason anyone applies for a trademark for anything they patent. Patents expire, but trademarks never do.

Well, since frame locks, are locks build directly into the frame, liner locks in the liner, lockbacks on the back, button locks being a button, etc.

Aside from the above mentioned "homage" of calling it by the original name, like many other household items, what's a good self descriptive term?

Spring Slider lock?

Axis lock is good.

It’s like calling inline skates Rollerblades, or using brand names in a generic role.

Jet ski, Crock Pot, Kleenex, Chap Stick, Q-tips, etc.

Kinda pays homage to the pioneers or inventor.
Agreed. We knife knuts can just refer to it as Axis Lock or Axis Lock Clone, but the manufacturers can't do that without violating a trademark.

I think what we need is the retailers to bunch them together for us under some term like that...
