What wood is this? (2nd Spoon )

Funny story from my recent trip: driving along the road in Tasmania and see this beautiful wood lying on the side of the road. I think the tree had fallen too close to the road so it had to be cleared. I pulled over and got my gf to grab a limb when a big 4x4 came around the corner and slowed down to see if I was in trouble. My gf had to wave him on and no doubt he left thinking she was trying to find a tree to squat behind. Once the vehicle left she returned, limb in hand and a little embarrassed.

Can any one identify this wood? The main trunk had a deep red wood but could be from the sap leaking out. Best guess so far is that it's wattle. Any takers?

Anywho, here's my second attempt at spoon carving.

I can say that the area is very damp and has lots of old man beard growing off of pretty much everything (even fence posts!).

Do you have alders there? That limb looks, bark texture and colors are very similar to whats normal with alder. The red color of the wood is what happens to pale alder wood very quickly when cut and exposed to air and sunlight. If it's very light wood and soft that would be another indication of alder.

I'm not familiar with the trees in that part of the world, but the bark and wood look a lot like the live oak around here.

Sassafras , Huon Pine, ??? check the national park website for the trees in that area.

It's the aboriginal "soul wood" that if you put it in your mouth it absorbs your soul and leaves you a zombie like husk that will eventually petrify until the next person comes along who was unaware of what they were getting into.

so you're saying he should use the spoon for serving, not eating with. :D

I've been trying to find information on the park websites but haven't had any luck. Definitely not either of those two though as they have very distinctive wood (plus Huon pine is extremely rare and precious so they would just cut one down and leave it on the side of the road).
