I was thinking Mango, Koa, or possibly but less likely, Ironwood.Difficult to say for sure since it's such a small piece, but it looks like a darker zebra wood.
I'm hardly a expert though.
I sanded and finished a bunch of stocks when I worked at a muzzleloader shop and that was my first thought as well.Looks like dark stained curly maple to me
The man who made it is now passed awayWho is the craftsman?
Have you thought of reaching out to them and seeing if they have it documented, or recall making it?
Maybe they use one wood prominently, and looking up his/her other models may shed some light on the subject.
