What wood is this?

My first guess, based on online research is Macassar Ebony. It smells, feels and cuts like other ebony blocks I have used.

Here's what my Macassar ebony looks like finished. Looks pretty similar to me.

It looks like old cocobolo block. It can turn almost black with age. Have you ground one side to see if it changes to a lighter or oranger color?

I have that one is cut in half. I have another 2x2x12 inch block of cocobolo..smells like cinnamon when sanding.

It looks very much like Makassar ebony to me. Beautiful stuff

Braved the icy roads and went to see a local wood guy. Confirmed...macassar ebony.
