Ok so I free hand on edge pro stone mostly because they are very cheap and I don't have the money to get a bunch of 30$ stones, but finishing on a 1k stone and stropping doesn't seem like enough. I've read bout so many people finishing on like 8k stones before stropping. I was wondering if anybody could recommend any specific stones that are finer than the 1k edge pro stone, but less fine than the Bark river stropping compounds. I say this because grits don't really mean anything because they aren't standardized and so I don't know if a 2k stone is really finer than a 1k because they might be using a different grit measurement system. Why can't everybody just use microns? Thanks in advance!

See grit cross-reference at bottom of page http://www.edgeproinc.com/. Going from EP 1K stone to BR white compound will give you a nifty good edge. Well, you can get Shapton for EP at 8K or 16K but I would rather buy some 3micron & 1micron & 0.5micron diamond spray or paste instead (yeah, cheaper too).

EP 1K is equivalent to around 6K waterstone, hence no reason to buy a stone with redundant grit.
