So guys, what do you think would be a good job for a college student?

Maybe something that doesn't suck, or perhaps something with enough down time so I can get some studying in.

Any suggestions?

A work-study job at the college. Depending on the gig you can have lots of on-the-job downtime and money to pay for school.

My old college roommate worked as a night security guard in manufacturing facilities and office buildings. He got work covering the entrance lobby where he sat at a desk with mostly nothing to do but wave at a couple guys and answer a phone now and then. He mostly spent his time studying and doing homework. In stead of getting behind at school he was forced to get ahead. It made him look like a genius. He essentially got paid to study.

depends on the place though and your security chief, when I worked security at Chrysler you didnt dare get caught reading anything or it was your butt.

I worked as a server/bar tender on the weekends and one day a week and managed from $20,000-30,000 a year working around 25-30 hours a week tops. It has it's ups and downs as it is good money for a college student, but your weekends are kind of shot and you have to get used to staying up late if you are not already. I'm kind of a night owl so it didn't bother me much.

If you feel you can't even put those kind of hours in then I suggest work-study also, but you aren't going to make much money from that.

I did two things... for money I somehow managed to get a 1/4 time research assistanceship which included a tuition and fee waver along with a monthly stipend. My boss was totally cool enough to let me work full time during the summer, yet I still got paid throughout the year. Managed to pay 5 out of 8 years college total.

For fun/beer money... I bounced at one of the campus hotspots. Drank for free after midnight, (in theory...) girls galore, got into any of the frat after-hours parties, and the occasional bit of violence. I must admit it was pretty tame in comparison to M1Marty's adventures, but I did work through the lawless Mike White coached football team era at Univ of Illinois. Lots of A-holes who liked to make trouble on those teams. I didn't earn much money, and although the bartenders were supposed to give us a portion of their tip money... that was a rarity. It was fun while it lasted, but I got really sick of drunk college students!;)

im in my later years of college...so i have been at this for a while....im not much of a drinker so i dont waste my money on booze and drugs and other pointless things....i do drink on occasion but that is rare and thus a few extra bucks for that is ok....its not about the job its about how u spend ur money...i have worked for a dinner...that was kinda stressfull between that and school...i worked for a theater which i liked and got me school credit....also i now have a work study job on campus...they usually work out the best and sorry to say but most jobs suck...i worked in the comp labs just did homework and played comp games that wasnt too bad....i also worked the front desk at night...that was also homework time or laundry time.....i use work as time to do homework or other tasks.....depends on the town but try to find something in the field that you are studying...ifs its law enforcement try to do campus security or work at the police station ..... well hope this helps...

Around here there are a lot of jobs in hotel gift shops that allow you to spend some of your time studying.

A good job is catering and special events, as a waiter. You get to go to all kinds of fancy parties, hang out with fellow co-workers most of the time, take home extra booze, all at $10-$20 an hour. Check catering companies in your area. Also, library jobs let you study while you man a desk, and make for nice lady-watching if that's your thing.

My approach to college jobs was to change it up and keep having fun. I never stuck with jobs for more than a year or so. The best jobs were those that included tips: Pizza delivery, waiter, bartender, etc. Paycheck was enough to pay the bills and tips paid for "fun". As Mongo said, bouncing gets old quickly at college joints so I tended to stick with biker joints and restaurant bars away from campus. Better tips and a more stable clientèle.

I agree on bartending. Its a good way to see a different side of life and you make decent $$. In college I bartended and waited at a Chicago south side restaurant and came away with a lot of funny stories.

The best college age job I ever had was fighting forest fires. Lots of high adventure, and it paid the bills well enough so I didn't have to work during school (in state tuition).

The worst job was Taco Smell.

College jobs are the best. Work study position (then it actually comes off your loans instead of you smoking it up) or something like dining hall can't be beat. They treat you well and pay pretty good and are understanding of schedules, etc.

I worked in college food service dorm food. The manual labor and working with food was a good motivation for studying hard. :D

As you said the schedule work arounds were also great. Not to mention a free all you can eat meal with every shift...perfect for the prototypical "starving college student".
