My brother is turning 11 soon and I want to get him his first big boy knife does anyone have any recommendations?

I was thinking about getting him this monstrosity as it is too heavy to bring to school.

No links please especially to knockoffs

A kershaw Cryo would be a fantastic first knife

Also, that link you posted is of a definite fake knife, that Medford is usually sold in the $600+ range. Aliexpress is known for selling fake knives.

Sadly true. I'd never buy knives (or at least not purportedly high end ones) there, but they do have a plethora of other inexpensive products.

Swiss Army Knife, that's all he will need at that age. Perhaps a good fixed blade if he does a lot of outdoors stuff with family and what not.

I was going to say BK11 or BK14 - guess I'm the only one that jumped to fixed blades.

Swiss Army Knife. Grandpa gave me my first at 8, still probably have it around somewhere.

I would have disowned my father if he gave me a fake, even at 11.

I gave my kids an ESEE "Izula" with scales. They are the right size and superb in their simplicity. Perfect for whittling, etc.

Don't get him one, get him two. A simple SAK folder and a Mora fixed blade (~$12). Then spend some time showing him proper handling, care, and basic sharpening technique.

Swiss Army knife was my first at age 5. Was great and I learned a lot with that knife

Start with a SAK, and based on how well he handles the responsibility, upgrade from there as needed

As said, you simply cannot go wrong with a nice Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. If you want it to be really nice, get him an alox model. But, you also can't go wrong with an Opinel. They're cheap, have decent steel, are easy to sharpen, come in a whole lot of different sizes, woods, colors, and designs. I'm 23, have owned Sebenza's, and I am still very impressed with Opinel's.

Nothing against the fans - maybe there's something I'm missing about them - but I've never cared for SAKs. Even as a kid, I wouldn't have appreciated one.
I think getting him something similar to what you, or somebody else he admires, uses would be the way to go.
