There is a ivory handled kithmoda on the H.I.website that I think is the perfect blade, don't care for the ivory or silver, but this blade just sings to me.(actually I love the ivory but not on a user) the one with the hawk head handle and chains on the sheath. www.tx3.net/~howardw/Khukuris/Styles.htm

I already have mine :D A silver-mounted, carved handled UBE, with carved sheath and silver bindings. Then, on the way to look at your Kothimoda, I spotted the 20" Chainpuri with the fancy handle and carved sheath. OH boyoboyoboy. Here we go again. You started up my HIKV, but welcome to the Cantina anyhoo :)

Berkley:

I hope I never see that one. Just the picture could keep me up nights :) What is its' history, origin - a blade like that has to have a story.

outstanding kithimora/kothimoda...

but it's not the silver, inlays, or engraving that flip my switch it's the blade design.

That would be telling, and if I told, someone might try it before me.

Too many choices. Blondes, Brunettes, Redheads, and Raven tressed beauties. ( Lately even silver and grey seem attractive. ) But above all, who and what they are and can and are willing to share makes them interesting. And yet I don't need to pick flowers from someone else's garden, I can appreciate them as I walk by on the sidewalk. Utterly delightful.

Some knives have similar appeal, character, personality.

Well, I think I even know twh right terms for its characteristics, here goes: Take a 15-18 inch long Ang Khola, now give it the subtle surve that the antique Khukuries have (hanshee), now give it the tin chirra fullers (actually two fullers and the illusion of three, the third being the edge bevel.), Steel furniture (I just like the look), and on some days a flat tang with riveted scales. The handles would have to be wood for a flat tang in my book, but on the through tang if there was a little extra carving I'd take buffalo horn. Not a terribly intricate knife, but nice all the same.

Hmmm - an M43 ( it's already a Panna Butta, right? ) forge engraved with the sun, moon, and stars by Sanu, and I'll handle it myself if I ever make up my mind, correction, that is if I ever find out where it went to when my back was turned.

( Mastodon leg bone, Fossil Walrus tusk, Blue Mammoth bark ivory, Hippo Ivory, Oosic, Narwhaal...

and there it's gone, again. )

What is a good ivory alternative that can stand up to the rigors of vigorous use, but will also yellow with age like ivory?

Dream knife would have to be something that weights next to nothing, can chop down a tree with one blow, sharp enough to cut anything effectively, and has investment value.

I guess I am really looking for a light sabre but a full size GRS or 18" WWII is as close as I will get.

Will

Mott--the only handle material that would stand up better and take the yellow-aged color would actually be the antique bone micarta. Check out Koval's catalog or Texas Knifemaker's Suppply. They'll probably have it. I know its a pain to work, but it does stand up well. Not terribly traditional, but you could always try bone. Not as precious, so if it gets cracked durring use, you wouldn't feel so bad about having to rehandle it. A buddy of mine actually sold a knife for $900 that had a dog bone for a handle. Scary thing was it looked really good!

Mott let me welcome you to the Cantina if I haven't already done so.
We have been getting so many forumites new to the H.I.Forum lately that I can't keep track anymore.:D

The YCS is one of my dream khukuris and was designed and the models carved myself in order to get what I wanted.
Sanu got it 98% correct as the one thing I wanted, and that was on the model, was a handle that had more curve in it.
But I know it's much, much easier to make and install the straight handles, and Sanu did get a little curve in it.:D
The kardas and 3 cornered awl was done Exactly to the models!!!!
The very first one approached literal perfection and the others I have and had came in a very close second!!!!
I am very happy with both the design and its performance.
The YCS has been pretty popular since its birth which has made me very proud.:o :D
It cuts and performs like a much heavier khukuri due to its blade geometry.
And I love the double fullered Dui Chiarra blade!!!!

And one of these days I hope to make a
Tin Chiarra with the 3 fullers on the blade patterned after the pic of an old one that John Powell was gracious enough to send me a pic of.:)
The 3 fullers ride high on the blade along the spine and it's another beautiful example of a full curving khukuri which I dearly love as well as a bunch of the other guys here.
I have a feeling it's gonna be a real Beetch to carve in order to get the 3 fullers laid in correctly.:)

Another one is the H.I. Scagel Style Southwestern Bowie I have in the works.
It's a long time coming due to my health problems, But I will get the model finished on of these days.:)
The fairly thin, according to H.I.standards, will be a convex or Moran Style grind!!!!
Believe me it will be worth the wait!!!!:D

A 22-24" Kobra, dark walnut handle, engraved silver buttcap and bolster, cow-hoof shaped cho, limited engraving on either side of the blade on the spine and the engravings are inlaid with brass. Made by Bura, from new stock 5160.

That would be my dream khukuri, and I'll order it sooner or later!

I did a model and sent it to Uncle Bill. It is not a khuk though, more of a bolo or barong. We will see what the Kamis do with it and if it comes out the way I hope. I guess I think there are enough khuk designs that I only need to find the correct one for any application. The model I did is something to excerise my creativity as much as my idea for my ideal knife. We will see what happens.

Rusty,

By your analogy, are some women "users" (by that I mean a caring helpful partner in a relationship BTW:D ) VS. a "wallhanger" ie, a woman who is merely interested in looking good and being looked at?

Just kidding:D ;) though I suspect there might be a kernel of truth in there somewhere....

Couldn't resist;) :)

I'm going to try to get pix of the M-43 model taken and posted today. Then I'll pack up the model along with kens bolo and get them shipped to Nepal probably tomorrow.

I sent Harry a khukuri some time back that had a white handle made of horn as I remember and it looked enought like ivory that Canadian customs held it for testing.

MauiRob, note the three final words.

Appeal
Character
Personality

All used to an extent to describe the inner core, the soul of a blade or a person.
