What would happen if I took my knife into the Post Office?

I have a CRKT M16-13Z. The blade is 3.5 inches, partially serrated.

When I go to the post office, I leave my knife in the car, since I must pass through metal detectors. What would happen if I forgot to lay it aside and walked in the Post Office and my knife set off the alarm?

I dunno. My local Post Office doesn't have any metal detectors or warning signs on the door. I always have my folder in my pocket, including when I have to go to the PO to send POMOs for more knives

I dont think there is anything prohibiting a knife as a tool in a USPO. I mail my knives all the time. THe Postmaster has watched me package them and never said a word. If it was a gun then youd have real trouble.

Mr. Goldfish,

And where might you live?

Haven't seen many P.O.s like yours...

The post offices I frequent do not have metal detectors. And I have loaned a formidable folder to a knifeless postal clerk to open a carton full of priority mail boxes, and B-S'ed about knives with postal clerks when nobody was in line behind me. Now if I were to wave a knife around and talk about my role as an agent of divine wrath or something like that, some authority types might make an issue of the knife.

That's wild! I put in a career in the Postal Service, retired as a manager of a New York post office. I used to carry knives all the time. I showed off my new knives, on the job. Nobody got upset.

Metal detectors??? When I started on the job, they used to give us knives, to cut open twine or wrappers or plastic bands. There was the ring knife, and another really nice one, basically a 4" blade paring knife, high-carbon steel that burnished to a beautiful dark color, and brass-riveted wooden handles.

By the way, for all the jokes you hear, workfloor violence in the Postal Service is really not common. We have the Postal Police officers and Postal Inspectors, which is a lot more security than many other large industrial enterprises. When we do have trouble, it makes headlines, though.

I ship knives all the time, no problem. We have metal detectors too, but they don't pick up. I've even pulled out my Dec. Sebenza right in front of a clerk, and damned near left it sitting on top of his "desk," and he yelled at me to come pick it up, because it looked like too nice a knife to be leaving around somewhere. DUH!

The town I live in built a new post office about a year ago, and it does have metal detector's... If a person is just going in to check a box you do not have to pass through it, but to get to where the clerks are at you do.

Let me clarify, I said it does have metal detector's... I assume that's what they are. There are two big contraption's similar to the things they have in video stores and such, that you must walk through to get to the clerks.

I have passed through it many, many times, and I have never set it off. I always carry at least two knives on my person, and I am usually in there shipping others out...

Perhaps it just detects certain types of metal... Like the types that throw lead

. Is that possible???

I dunno, but the next time I go in there I will find out! That's one advantage of living in a small town... I know almost everyone that works in there...

Post Office next to the Federal Building in Oakland, CA has what appear to be metal detectors. Probably set to a pretty high threshold, since you can't have everybody's keys, belt buckles, etc. setting them off. Certainly my knives don't.

Man you are lucky!
The Post Office I frequent, they strip search you and that can take HOURS, I go everyday!

But seriously, I go to several in the area of Elmira NY and they are all great people there and I would certainly set off alarms with the many knives I carry into there, not just to ship but I usually have up to 9 knives on me at any given time, the guys at work have a bet everytime I walk into the break room to see how many I'm carrying that day.....

OR was this justs a Funny post to get responses? maybe sooo.....

The PO here in Boston is in a Federal Courthouse and they not only have metal detectors but about 15 men and women security gaurds standing around the entrances drinking coffee and yaking. You can't even have a cigerette lighter on you with out the alarms going off. I don't take anything in at all and the reason being is I don't feel like arguing with 10 self important little bozo's at the door whether or not my knife is within legal limits. I learned along time ago you don't argue with no brain people because the more you push them the harder they stand and its just not worth my time.

When I pick up out of my POB, I always stand at the table and open my mail with whatever folder-of-the-day I'm carrying. Some looks of horror from the sheeple, but never any problems.

Why don't you either call them, or just try it and find out? They can't throw you in the slammer for a pocketknife, can they? If you are in violation of their policy you just walk back to your car and dump the blade, then you're in!

My local PO has detectors placed by the doors to detect shoplifting. Some stamps are packaged and hanging on a self serv rack. These packages contain a strip that will sound an alarm if carried past the detectors located at the doors. I would bet that these are what you are calling "metal detectors".

When you walk through a metal detector and guys are waving wands around as you enter I think its pretty safe to say they are indeed metal detectors and not for shoplifters especially since its an entrance. All Federal Bldgs have them here after the Oklahoma bombing.

Those two things that you walk between to get inside are not metal detectors to the best of my knowledge. They are magnetic strip detectors. If you walk through them with a pack of stamps or packaging material that you haven't paid for, it will detect the magnetic strip and beep loudly. When you pay for it, they rub the magnetic strip against a deactivator pad so you can walk through it. I've walked through them on several occasions packing a BM Stryker and an automatic MT UDT. No problems. Only time it beeped was when the post office guys couldn't figure out how to get the magnetic strip deactivator working and I walked through it with a pack of stamps I had already paid for.

There is usually a notice, even on the older USPO's, that says you can't carry a firearm or any "dangerous weapon" into this facility. It's rather vague, so you could just tell them it is a tool and not a weapon. You'd have a harder time bringing a gun inside. Of course I could probably tell them that my lock for my PO Box got jammed and I needed something to blast it open.

Here in Cincinnati,Ohio it's not a problem. at least the PO's Ive gone to. When ever I go to the PO They ask "What kind of knife you got in there now?" The guy at my local office carries a full size AFCK.

All right I guess they are not metal detectors then. So tell me why when I walk into (notice I said into) the PO there are heavily armed men watching as I empty my pockets and put everything in the little plastic dish so that the conveyor can carry it through the airport type machine. Then as I am still entering the bldg and I walk through the black frame and set off alarms cause I forgot to take some change out of my pocket and 3 big armed guys in blazers start waving wands all over my body to see just what it was that set off the alarms, now all this is happening at the ENTRANCE see I haven't even been inside the PO yet. So help me out here and tell me what this is called.Cause it sure as hell appears to be metal detectors to me. I could be wrong though maybe the ones at the airport aren't metal detecters either but machines to make sure no one is stealing airline food.
