What would the interest level be in a Perrin PPT sprint with an Elmax blade?

Two things I currently find myself interested in, 1) the design and construction of the Perrin PPT folder, and 2) a folder with an Elmax blade contoured a bit thinner than the axe head which resides between the scales of my ZT Hinderer 0551.

Then the light bulb comes on. I wonder if folks might be interested in a combination of the two. Notwithstanding the potential complication of getting a Bohler steel to Taiwan, do you think there'd be much demand if someone commissioned a sprint run for such a combo?

Note: I could easily be persuaded to substitute M390 for Elmax. ;)

Having just received m PPT yesterday and being very impressed with it, how could I say no?!?!:thumbup: The only Elmax bladed knife I have is the Kershaw Speedform. It is a very sharp knife, but with it's narrow, and thick blade, it probably does not make the best use of this steel. Although, I really love the profile of the Speedform and would not change it an iota!

So, yeah, I'd be up for one.:)

I ordered a PPT a few days ago, and it should be arriving today. I'll check back later with a final answer, but I'm going to take a wild guess (;)) and say I'd be in for a couple of a hypothetical Elmax PPT sprint (or, really, any other Spydie sprint with Elmax).

I have some doubts about whether something like this could happen, though. Most of Spyderco's sprints with premium steels and/or new handle materials/colors tend to use their bread & butter models -- such as the Military, Para 2, and Manix 2 -- as the base. I'm not sure whether there's enough demand for the regular PPT for Spyderco (or a dealer) to take a chance on a sprint run PPT with a premium steel. I hope I'm wrong, though, since as I mentioned above, I'd like to see it. :)

I think the fact that it's made in taiwan is a huge deal breaker for some people..and I doubt there would be a company nor spyderco would invest in pushing for a sprint run made overseas with the potential of not being that successful

You could of course put me down for at least 2 or 4 of those. Hell, I'd love a Gayle Bradley in that steel as well, probably even more than the PPT.

CF Military would do the trick..........
over the PPT....

Why do you think there would be such resistance to having a sprint run done in Taiwan? Have all previous sprint runs been done exclusively stateside? (I don't know the answer here, I'm asking.) My CF ZDP Stretch was manufactured overseas and it's one of the best folders I own.

My only thought was to remove as many obstacles to getting something like this done as possible. Being as the current production Perrin is produced in Taiwan, IIRC, it would seem logical to have a sprint run done there as well. Alternatively, perhaps the handles could be shipped in from Taiwan to be mated with blades manufactured in Golden. Just thinking out loud.

I'm certain you could find 1200 Spyderco customers intelligent and open minded enough to realize that the models made in Taichung, Taiwan, are as good or better than those made anywhere else on the planet. Plus, unlike the Japanese, the folks in Taiwan don't consider all "foreign" steels to be inferior and get insulted if asked to use them. Only real questions would be whether the maker there could work with Elmax, whether they'd be willing do the run, and finding someone would sponsor it. Have a hunch the last one would be the only real obstacle.

As for me, a wrong handed lock is a deal breaker, regardless of where a knife is made or what materials it's made from.

i love my PPT, it has been my EDC for the last month, M4 would not be bad either and with some titanium for the lock and liners i would be in heaven

I loved the prototypes of the PPT but have not broken down to buy the knife yet due to stainless liners. But a sprint run with an exotic steel like M4, Elmax or M390 I would buy one in a heartbeat. Switch out the stainless liners to Ti and I would join tomdogma in heaven.

That is 100% correct. Taichung is 2nd to none........
Just takes some folks a while I guess. They really are that good.
Trust me, I was a hold out until I saw one. Thats all it takes.
Now I just about have 'em all, and want more................

My PPT ended up arriving yesterday rather than on Saturday as I had hoped, but now that I have it I can say with complete certainty that I'd be all over a PPT sprint run in a premium steel.

just a heads up, if you want an upgraded ppt there's also the custom route.
fred perrin designed it with Philippe perotti and sacha thiel, Sacha thiel actually produces them (and quite a lot of other gorgeous knives), with very high tolerances.

obviously the price is not the same, he is one of the finest french custom knifemakers in the tactical/modern area.

Love that large PPT in the blue.:thumbup:

I've been carrying my PPT since it arrived last week. Carry it in my right back pocket where it clips all the way inside my pocket. This is a cutting machine! I've cut rope, nylon, and some oil and dirt encrusted manilia rope, along with a bunch of cardboard. It sliced right through everything without hinderance. When it started to lose that razor edge, I hit it 20 times each side on my white Sharpmaker stones and brought that razor edge right back up!:)
