was thinking hard in the hosp this weekend
( passing 4 kidney stones)
on what would you call a repaired buck knife?
say a early 110 with thiner blade
one you want to keep as was in another thread..
does it get a new thicker blade and lock bar?
is it still a type what ever? or frankin-buck as some have called mixed part knives?
what if you send in a correct year knife with bad handle to transplant that good blade
to your keep sake knife ?
can it be called factory? ( it was done there right?)
is factory = orgional ?
we see knives from buck with mixed parts at times
some of these sell for a LOT some dont?
why would you think that is ?

we've seen factory 110's with 560 blade and 425 blades
and 560's with 110 blades even the new 111 with 110 blades
so how should they be classed in a display ? are they 110's even ?
surly they are odd and or unusal
what you do you guys think of mixed heartage knives esp 110's?
what you think to see them classed as ?
is it ok to jest put them under the same lable as reg issue 110"s?

comments any one?
as inquireing mimes want to know...

Passed a couple of stones and started thinking of Buck 110's. I would just call them unique or one-of-a-kind.

Get better, Dave. (I thought there must be a reason you were so quiet.)

Just call them Factory Modified knives (if the work was done at the factory, of course).

FrankenBuck is not a respectful name (save that for those with non-Buck parts added).

:)

Good Question,
I personlly like the bucks in their cleaned polished condition but I am a newbie would be interested in what everyone else has to say. I have to think that over also as I have to send in alot of 110's, 112's, and a few other's for spa treat. Do I ask for a new blade on the heavy use 2 liners or just ask for clean, sharp, polish if I get rebladed do they send old blade back? Do I want a 2liner or 1 liner with a 2011 Blade? Do I want a 1st variation cleaned and Polished or leave 46 years of patina, well none of this matters compaired to your position, feel better and let me know what you think Dave, Here's to a speedy recovery.

I think, in my amateur opinion, that as long as the frame style matches the age range of the replacement blade's stamp, and as long as the work was done by Buck, it counts as a "factory original" 110. Maybe some will disagree with me there, and that's ok... I'm not an expert.
I also think that stamp is less important here than in some other arenas, because we've seen 422's with 112 blades, for example, as long as it's a combination that was in fact released by the factory at that time.

Sorry to hear about the stones Dave....they suck!!!

Funny you should start this thread. I was thinking about the same topic. Not long ago I picked up what was listed as a stag chippy 55. When it came I saw what I had missed in the photos....the chippy 55 blade is in a 503 frame. So, what is it?

Hope you're feeling chipper soon Dave and home viewing your 110's. This always helps. DM

Hope you're feeling better Dave,

lot's of questions which raise more questions...
Early 110 re-blade with newer style blade, perhaps we call that a factory repaired 110.

110 or 112 blade swapped BY Buck with proper blade for it's timeline, I think it's an original 110 or 112 ...they all started out as piles of seperate parts, right?
and all the work was done by Buck.

Now the mixed part knives could get pretty interesting, after all, what were they labeled as from the factory???
take jb's knife above...years later even with the box how could one prove without some form of COA exactly what that knife is...
was it built by Buck that way...was it a customized by another...who would know?

What about knives from My collection... some I have swapped period blades to make a keeper..Once the pin is peined and the bolsters re-finished how could anyone ever tell if all of the parts are original to that knife???

If a non Buck blade is put into a Buck frame , in my thinking that knife now becomes a" Customized " 110.
Same would apply for a re-scale or any other mod. not original to that knife.

yes this was what i had in my mind between the 4 stones
my self -
repaired with correct year parts as i share with stiflyer original
as said they all were parts once..
and many were repaired with correct parts years ago ..

that chipy JB4570 has ... wow what a neat combo..
i have it on good word that buck employees can still work on
their own personal knives,,, which they may gift to relatives elseware

many wonderfull things come out of santa's buckelves factory
most i would call employee factory customs i guess

my appoliges for the frakenxxxxx
it is not a good term
jest like a kid i tend to use words i hears some place..

oh one reason i thought on this is that
i am going to break up my displays to
one table for the best of the gold etch
and a seperat display table that is
odd and unusal folding hunters for the
con-a-ser of the not so offten seen...

and jest wandered at what to call them
some will be .. well ... will let that be a suprise to all...
come to the bcci shows to see the wander of buck !!!

jb, I would say that is one SWEET little knife!

Thanks sitflyer,

That one was made by buck and some were sold on the Buck web special site. However, I got this one fishing in the bay.

Dave,
4 stones at one time, man oh man, I feel for ya. I have had them 3 times, but, only on stone at a time. The worst one was the size of a 2 carrot diamond (I still wonder how that made it out of my plumbing)

yeaks you did good then to fish one o thoes up!
as i said many many suprisingly odd and good things
find their way out of buck ...

it was my wandering on how to class them in to some sort of group to display
as there is not a commonly used term for these knives
and my self think that it would be a great thing to come up with one
seems bg may have the best idea of
""Just call them ""Factory Modified Knives "" or Factory Modified
as this would cover ALL thoes that were done by the factory

a standard term that would cover any non standard knife
from any time during BKI operation
that was not other wise recorded as a :
cataloge knife or custom shop and limited edition as thoes have a COA

build outs, factory spechals and errors would be covered
then as some thing diffrent then employee made knives
of course most of these will not have any coa as a buld out or spechal..
and certently the older ones wont ...

i seen several older knives that i called "emplolyee custom "
knives made or modified during 'lunch & break time' or after hrs.
and also thoes knives that a major sales man would ask to be made
as samples to show to customers of what they might could order..
this would also cover protype knives..
several have some like that...from former employes :)

oh yea the stones passed the kidney at over two hours or so apart..
and come about 4 am when i was able to go
the bad news is there is a 4 mm stone and a smaller 1 mm left
showing on the ct- one mm seems stable, the other 4 mm is a time bomb
