What would you choose

I have been looking at the following knives:

MORA 2000
MORA 860
BENCHMADE Pardue Rant
Ontario RAT 3
SOG field PUP

The knife I'm looking for is an all around outdoor knife. I do a lot of various outdoor stuff from primative camping, to sailing, to backpacking. I wanted a sheath knife, that was 8" or less, and under 100 dollars. (Ideally even less)
I was originally looking at only the bottom 3 until one guy reccomended mora knives. Would anyone support his recomendation, or suggest something else. Please let me know which of these knives you would choose if you were on a budget.

The Mora knives are very nice and inexpensive, solid performers for the price, but I wouldn't choose one over a Rat 3, perhaps in addition to, but not in place of.

Exactly what I was going to say.
Moras are very nice, but compared to a RAT 3 it's no contest in my opinion.

moras are great (for cutting) but not very though imo

the rat is better for batoning and such, for a survival knife get the rat

I am afraid the rc-3 is out of my price range. If everyone is saying get a rat-3, does anyone know the cheapest place to get one, because that is the most expensive one on my list. thanks.

No need to go broke getting a Cadillac when a Chevy will do the job well enough.

If a Rant is within your price range, get that.
Currently US-made, 440C. Decent size. Well designed. Seems a reasonable choice.

If all of those knives were laid on a table and I was allowed to pick one up and take it home, I'd probably go for the Benchmade. I really like the overall shape and appearance.

But if buying one for myself, a designated user for the tasks you mentioned, I'd probably choose a Mora. My preference is the wood models - I think the plastic models look 'chinzy' and I like the full-length tangs. But the 860 looks all right, with the bright colors and rubber grip.

Good luck deciding!

it's really not fair to compare the mora and the rats/benchmades since they're at different ends of the price spectrum. if given the choice for your use i'd go with the rat3. as far as price the best place to pick one up is to keep an eye on the boards since they come up from time to time. I agree with an above poster that if you could afford it try to pick up an rc 3 or 4 since ontario has been involved in some less than honorable business practices of late. good luck and let us know what you get.

If I was stuck in the woods, and needed a reliable knife would the mora knives suit such a case, or are they not dependable. Also, would a rat-3 have rust problems if I used it in the water?

as long as you don't leave it in water for long periods of time and just neglect it, you'll be fine.

just dry it off and wipe it with some oil and you'll be fine.

in answer to your question if you used a mora to cut i think it would serve you very well. yes a rat will rust but with minimal care you'll be okay.

I have an Ontario Rat-3. I have been using it with my shortened trail hawk as a backpacking combo for a few years.
