What would you do w/$600?

The PKA show in Denver is next weekend and I've been saving my pennies and re-arranged payment schedules to free up $600.

Now my problem is -- what to buy? I was thinking maybe a $150-$200 "user" fixed blade, and maybe something kinda collectable or "fancy" in the $300-$400 range. Or does it make more sense to blow the whole wad on one "killer" knife?

I'm 1/2 tempted to just buy a Kit Carson medium model 4, or a Medium TnT but I can get one of those "any time" (so to speak) -vs- this once-a-year show.

Thoughts? I generally avoid the custom knives at gun shows because I have _no idea_ what they're worth. Production knives I have a better idea, but customs are anyones guess. This is my first real knife show and I don't want to do anything stupid.

Personally, I'd go over to Mayo's table and snag a TNT. You cannot go wrong with one of these. Tom might have something bagged under the table too. Don't be too shy to ask ! Don't be to bashful to offer anything of value you you might have along with you to trade, a Rolex, a 50 caliber sniper rifle that blasts out those 672 gr. boattails to 2500 yards. ;)

Sorry, I don't think either Tom or Kit will be in Denver. A purveyor might have their knives though...

Enjoy the show!

Yeah, as a matter of fact, I already pinged Tom.

No, what I meant was I could order a Kit Carson or Tom Mayo knife today. The net being what it is, I'd comparison shop and pay the "going rate" at any number of reputable dealers.

The problem I see with a knife show, is that there will be a bunch of knives and makers I've never seen or heard of, and I could very easily pay too much. I'm thinking I might blast up on Friday, poke around for a few hours, then do some Internet searches and come back on Saturday prepared to buy. At least that's the plan.

We shall soon see.

another carson with some fancy scales and either stellite or talonite

OR

one of mike coopers damascus folders w/ivory

neither would have a clip because it would be sent to gary graley for a sheath.

I know for a fact Larry and Vince are going to be there and I just sent them three TNTs, and I owe them more!! :)

Gor for it, the P7M8 is just awesome.....plus the refurbs are a great buy at $650 or so.

Oh, I also must get one of your TNT's very soon.

interesting - when I read the subject header I immediately thought "Carson M4 or Mayo TNT." I guess they must both be doing allright, considering how common that rection seems to be!

although to be fair, immediately afterwards I also thought "D Ralph CF EDC."

Yeah, the "problem" is that I can get either of those off the Internet today. I'm thinking since this is a once-a-year show, I should buy something I can ONLY get at the show, or only if it's a lot better deal than I can get online (not likely?).

Buying a Mayo or Carson from a dealer at a show seems a lot like traveling to Europe then eating at McDonalds....or maybe ordering Budwieser in Scotland.

Mike, I'll make it easy on you. Slip me $500 and I'll point out the best $100 knife at the show. See you there.

Mike, don't fall for that ripoff of Hoffman's. You give me $400, I'll fly out there, show you the coolest $200 knife I can see, and I'll spring for the first round of beers after the show.

Terrill, how DO you live with yourself. :D

You'll do just fine. Wander around and don't get fixated on one kind of knife. Let your eyes wander and keep your mind open. Something will definitely jump out and grab you. Have fun!

Send the cash to Blues or Gus.
Then they will let you post a for sale ad here :D

Actually, after his brain operation Terril cant tell the difference between $100 and $500......thats why he charges $75 for his pictures!! :) :p :) :p

The thought of an M4 gives me one every time.

I'll have to admit, I'm damn close to saying the hell with the show and buying this right now.

*initiate drooling* Is that a medium M4 with a fighter-style blade?
Thats close to my dream using folder right there. Heck, I already have 3 Model 4s but if I had the cash, I think I can explain one more to the wife ;)

Yeah, it's pretty much EXACTLY what I was looking for a couple months ago.

The only problems are:

1. It's "merely" BG-42 -vs- 420V or Talonite
2. Black scales. CF is cool, but black is still black.
3. I already have an Obenauf model 1

I don't think you're trusting your own judgement enough, Michael.

I suggest you spend some time on the web, looking at Knife Art, BladeArt, Arizona Customs, and the like, looking at a wide variety of knives. Note the prices. Maybe then do your Friday look see, Friday nite web study, then buy on Saturday, but, of course, some good knives will be sold Friday, that you're aceing yourself out of.

You very likely will find a good knife or two that really float your boat, and go away a very happy camper. I think you're right. You can shop off the web any day, and you can order from makers whose work you like anytime. And, after going to the show, that might be what you decide to do. But if you don't go to the show, you'll never know, will you?
