This is the survival forum, so with that in mind and $50 in your hand, what knife would you buy right now? No other stipulations, it's a wide open question for you to fill in the answer...

...ok, ok, just kidding!

A Cold Steel SRK 'second'...and with the change I'd be looking for a SAK...

A Bible, a bunch of contractor's grade trash bags, some paracord or equivalent, magnesium bar with striker or Firesteel and a multi-tool.

Many many have gone very very far with less!

Excellent answer Nimrod!

A few other great choices on a limited budget are a Camillus pilot survival knife and a Camillus G.I. pocketknife. I've used these two knives for years with no complaints. Definitely "best buys", at around $30 for the pilot knife and $12 for the pocketknife.

Regards,
Clay

As I understand the question, we're looking to spend $50 on survival blade(s) only.

Plan A: Spend the budget on a Camillus/BK&T Combat Utility 7. Mighty good knife.

Plan B: Thru Smokey Mountain I'd spend $8 on a Frost's Swedish Army knife, $5.50 on a Tramontina 12" machete, $3.50 on a sheath for same, those 2 can ride on my belt. Spend $17 on a Tinker SAK for my pocket. For my butchers kit, $10 will buy an Old Hickory 3 piece set including a 7.5" medium butcher knife, a paring knife and a 5" boning knife, and I'd spend my final $6 on a 7" Old Hickory slicing knife...unless I can find an Old Hickory skinning knife for $6, Smokey Mountain doesn't carry one. Not very flashy, I'll admit. But a pretty useful array for $50.

If I didn't already have these items, I'd purchase a Douk Douk($15.00), a bolo or panga Cold Steel Machete($5.99), and the left over cash would go towards items to complete an "SAS style" survival kit.

I'll second the recommendation from TexasCarl for the Becker Combat/Utility-7 (BK7) as the current survival blade of choice for under $50. After that I'd go with Melvin-Purvis' idea of $30 for a CS SRK factory second and use the other $20 to buy a SAK.

Or use $5 to buy a hammer to hit a Busse knife owner over the head. ;) ;) :D JUST KIDDING!!

1) Axe the size of a small forest axe from GB

2) Mora #1

3) Machete

I just may have some change left over for pinball!

Easy, A Camillus 4 1/4" stockman & a Leatherman Supertool.
Bought both of E-bay for less than $50. With these I can do
most anything. Chop , no. Survive, yes.

that was too easy,:D

now only getting the $50 and not letting my wife know about the whole deal:( very difficult

I'd treat myself to a 2lb. steak and promptly go and hibernate. :D

Ontario Spec Plus SP 10 Bowie for $38,
DMT red/blue sharpener for $8,
Generic kitchen paring knife 3" blade for $4.

...your post about the Busse owner reminded me of a comment made by a buddy of mine back during the L.A. riots...

Him: "We should all buy extra guns and ammo, so we can trade them for food if we need to sometime in the future..."

Me: "Yeah, I'd trade bullets for food, one bullet at a time..." ;)

An 8x12 Tarp, a 200 feet of 550 Para-cord, an SAK Tinker, a Firestarter, and a large pot.

If I can spend $50 only on a knife then I'd have to go with one of the multi-tools. Swiss, Gerber or Leatherman depending on what I can find on sale.
