What would you do with this Rubicon

I just got this today. I noticed that, in the right light, there are sparkly imperfections in the clip side scale, almost look like small chips in the finish. At other angles you can't see them. he other scale is perfect.

I am thinking of returning it since it is pricey mainly what I am paying for is the CF scales. Other than that the knife is great.

What do you think? Too picky?

If your planning on using it, I wouldn't worry about it. If your more into the safe queen thing, then I'd probably send it back.

If you're not happy return it to the dealer

That's what that material will do when contoured sometimes. Just like slight imperfections in wood, stone etc. your next one might be perfect, or worse

Well I don't think this is a safe queen quality knife, I think I will use it as one of my EDC. But it looks so good, maybe only for special occasions like my anniversary, presidents day, St Patrick's and Pulaski day. LOL.

You are going to be the only person to notice and like stated above, the next one could be worse. I wouldn't worry about it.

For the record, I didn't see any of those in my Rubicon.

I had the same issue in my carbon fiber bear can. Since I had spent sooooo much money on it, I called the manufacturer about it. I found out that the voids you are seeing are not that unusual in carbon fiber production. Structurally and functionally speaking the carbon fiber is fine and has plenty of strength. The issue is purely cosmetic. Considering the price of that knife and the fact that looks are a big part of that knife...(and my Rubicon does not have that issue), I would exchange it for one that looks perfect.

Here's mine you can compare to if you want...

I'd keep it, just because the flaw makes it unique. Of course, the resale might be affected but that's not a worry for me, as I do not sell my knives.

If you took the time to ask about it here, obviously its more of an issue than you let on. Send it back and get another one and you'll be happier.

Suggest you return it no matter what you do with the knife.. You made a deal on a new knife.. Not a 2nd hand knife. Personally, don't like buying new things that aren't in perfect as new condition..

If you read above you'll see it's not a 2nd hand knife, and the condition is explained as not a flaw but part of the manufacturing process. If you're going to be that picky good luck with your future purchases. This is an art done by hand by people who know what they are doing.

We had an older thread concerning the appearance (visual slight flaws) on the ZT 0770. Quite a few sent theirs back for replacement. I suspect that it's not too big a deal one way or the other. Visual imperfections of that type would not prevent me from buying a knife.

The age old Carbon fiber appearance discussion...

If you want completely perfect uniform pattern, regardless of structural integrity, try a hydrodipped or other sort of checkered pattern graphic. It will probably look more even than most real carbon fiber.

I hear the discussion all day long in the cycling world, where layups and weaves can vary wildly, and also effect ride compliance and power transfer, all depending on pattern... yet visually much of it looks a bit messy and inconsistent...

I had the same freak out when I received my Fluted Titanium Military last summer. On the bottom of the scale there were dings like it was tapped five times on a metal work bench. There was a buffer mark the size of a dime at the pivot. It really stood out in direct sun light. However was barely visible in any other light. I sent a freak out email to the retailer. By the time received a reply with return instructions I had calmed down and started carrying it. I sent an apology back to the retailer and carry it in my weekly rotation.

It even became my signature pic.

Yes it was new. I figured I am paying for the handles on this puppy, so I brought it in an exchanged it - no big deal. It isn't hand made is it? It is mass produced. The new one does not have any flaws in the scales.

While I was there I picked up a ZT 350CF m390. Maybe I shouldn't have exchanged it LOL.

Excellent ending! Just don't look to hard for inclusions on the new ZT...:D
