What would you do

Ok I have a spyderco military se which I like except for the serrations. I found that I prefer the plain edge.
I bought a used military as part of a deal, when the guy sent me photo's something looked wrong but I am not a spyderco guy.
I asked him if the tip had been broken and he said no, it is just from him sharpening it.
Well when it arrived, I found the blade was at least 1/4" short.

Here are a couple of pictures for reference

So my question is, if this knife was yours what would you do with it?

Just to be clear
I do not mean trying to go back on the trade or anything like that.

Would you keep it
Would you modify it in any way
Or would you do what I have done so far and just thrown it into a drawer

I don't know if I would feel right selling it to a non-knife guy.
I really would only consider selling it to someone that knew exactly what they were looking at
I personally don't think a knife guy would want a damaged knife like this.

Lesson learned about going with my gut when something doesn't look right

The guy was a liar. Tip was broken off and he fixed it. If he's a regular forum member, may want to take him to GB&U to warn future buyers. Since you're not returning it, give it away so it does some good. Or use it as a beater knife and see how much abuse it will take before failure. :)

Check with Spyderco to see if they will reblade it and what it might cost. You may even be able to upgrade the steel. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I agree, quite obvious the tip was broken off and reground to give it a new tip. If it was a trade on this forum I'm sure future traders would appreciate a heads up/warning about dealing with this guy so they don't get a raw deal, next time he might not even bother sending anything in return.

Were you lied to about the overall condition of the knife? Was it presented a a NIB or Slightly Used?

It's a Military so it's basically a good strong knife. Use it as a beater or a gift.

If he was careless in method that he used to...ahem...re-grind the tip, he could have ruined the temper of the steel.

To answer a few questions
No I didn't get the knife from any member of this forum.
When I asked about the knife, the gentleman told me it was a user but in very good shape
When I asked him if the tip had been broken, he said no but he had sharpened it a few times
Funny thing is when it arrived it was so dull you could not cut wet you know what with it

Even after I got the knife he swore up and down that the tip was never broken
When asked he also claimed he never used a grinder or file to sharpen it.

Like I said it is my own fault to agreeing to the deal when I had that gut feel that something wasn't right in the picture.

I think I will sharpen it up before I put it away again.
Next spring/summer I will probably give it to someone that is going camping and doesn't have a decent knife.
My nephew's all got knives from me, so maybe one of their friends
Turn the negative to a positive I guess

He's either a liar, one of the world's worst knife sharpeners, or he bought it used with the tip already broken and re-tipped.

Regrind that bad boy in a tanto tip...I've seen it done and I think it looks great...just my .02. Its a solid knife...why a beater? Its not the knife's fault...use it like any other Military.

If he's not super into knives he may not have even known.
That or he's a liar.

I would use it if I were you.

But if you prefer a full plain edge, I'd just use it until I could get the one I really want.

I'd get it sharp and gift it to someone who doesn't know the difference if I were in your shoes. I'd also make sure anyone on this forum knows that the person you did business with is not above board to prevent the next guy from getting your deal.

Or, I'd enjoy the new beater and beat the hell out of the knife only to resharpen it and gift it to someone who doesn't know better.

Thanks guys
I do think I am going to sharpen it properly and give it away to someone that can't afford a decent knife.
My nephew's have some friends that come to mind

Funny thing on another thread I mentioned that I just bought a police g3 off of a co-worker.
He told me that he bought it for protection against cougars when hiking.
He thought he had it for about 2 years and he offered it to me for $60
I gave him the money and he brought the knife in, when I saw it I could not believe it had ever been used.

When asked he said that although he hiked with it all the time he had only used it once and that was to test the edge when he first got it.
