What would YOU do?

I have a BM 940CFD2. I really love the warmth and contours of the carbon fiber scales and the ability of the D2 to take and hold a very sharp edge. On the other hand, I can't stand the shape of the reverse tanto blade. A clip point would be much more appropriate for the work I require of a knife. The 940 has fallen into disuse.

I asked Angie at BM (she's terrific) about replacing the blade with a 941 (clip point). The said the conversion would only cost $25 (gotta like that), but that D2 was unavailable. It would have to be done in 154cm.

As I see it, I could:

1. Get the conversion and live with the 154cm,
2. Put off the conversion in the hopes that D2, M2 or S30V becomes available sooner or later, or
3. Leave the knife in a drawer until I think of something better (don't want to sell this one because the Axis is fun and I like the carbon fiber so well).

What would you do?

#2, it sounds like you are pretty particular and why waste $25 and be dissapointed all over again.

I have a 943 and the blade shape is great for everything that I use it for.

Now to your question, if you really want the clip point blade I would spend the $25.00 on the 154CM version. 154CM is a good steel, I have had a lot of good use out of it. Granted it is not one of the newer super steels but it is a great worker. I have found that mine holds an edge very well, it doesn't chip very easily, and it is very rust resistant. The only problem is if you get rid of the D2 blade you no longer have a true limited edition knife. If you can get the knife you really want for an extra $25.00, that seems like a good deal.

JMHO.

I personally would like to see a 943 with a carbon fiber handle and an s30v blade, now that would be a great knife. 943s30vCF is kind of a long name but I would buy one in a heartbeat.

I'm new to knives and steel and didn't know how good 154 was. My only nice knives are a S30V Sebenza and the D2 Benchmade. Since $25 isn't that much, I'll try the 154CM since the shape will fit me better. If a more exotic steel comes along in the future I can always send it back again. Thanks for the advice, and thanks to BM for such terrific aftermarket service.

$25 isn't that much. Assuming you will get to keep the D2 blade, you can always have it switched back at a later date if you don't like it. Or, you could just send it to me, as I love the shape of the reverse tanto blade.:)

I say get used to the reverse tanto blade. The edge on the 941 vs. 940 is exactly the same. The only difference is the back of the blade. You still get a fine point on the 940, and you can keep the D2 steel, and save yourself the $25 plus shipping. If it's purely asthetics, get over it. You'll be happy you did. :D

I'd do it. I have a 154 CM red handled 941, a 941D2CF and a 941Ti-01. I use teh CF model the most. I'm not sure how much difference you'd notice going to 154CM except for the lack of mirror polishing that's on the D2 blade. You'd have a one of a kind. I love carbon fiber.

Of course, a Ti and S30V limited edition would be fool to have (love mine) but you lose that organic feel of the CF and it's certainly not as light as the CF version.
