What would you do...

If a random, unknown user came in and asked if anyone had a spare knife you could give him? How would you respond? And no, I don't want any of your knives (well, I don't want you to send them to me at least), I'm just bored and curious.

I don't know about a new member that you can't really get a feel for, would depend on the situation I guess...
I do know that there is a lot of generosity and some very giving people in this subforum, and there have been many things given away...

If someone just "showed up" and asked for a spare knife, I would probably abstain.

However.

Fella I know through some other fellas, and whom I've never met, had occasion to lose a pocket knife of which he was rather fond and with which he had quite a bit of history.

Well, it happens that my interest in traditional slipjoints was rekindled by way of some of his observations and remarks, and I have a certain respect for his grasp of "things the way they are" in this world.

Seemed to me that I had more knives than I needed and that at least one of them would be something he'd actually use. Another feller I know got hold of me and asked if there was some way we could gift him a replacement for his lost knife. In the end, there were four of us involved.

Now, I'd have sent my own personal contribution separately, but this feller is kinda reticent about giving out his address, so I had to piggy-back that one with the group gift, via the only guy I know who has this feller's address.

It wasn't a big deal, really (we're talking about a $25 knife, see), but there's kind of a distant kinship thing there, and we were all just kind of tickled to be able to restore his loss.

He never asked. We had to sneak up on him with it.

I'd have paid good money to see his face when he opened that package. We had engraved one of the blades. Just a couple of words, but heart-felt.

It was fun, it was friendship.

I'm glad we did it.

That may not be a straight answer, but it's all I've got.

I have sent out more stuff than I can remember at this point maybe more than should have been realistically, but I do it for selfish reasons since I enjoy putting a knife in the hands of someone who appreciates the tool. Usually do it due to something that I have read here that came from the heart. Begging turns me off. ;).

I do not lend out my knives to anyone, especially someone I do not know!!

A couple years ago I came across a lady at a gun show selling used sak's. They were a bunch of TSA confisacted knives from people who were dumb enmough to try to go through security. For 3 dollars apiece or 5 for 2 dollars, I bought a bunch of classics.

Over the course of the next several months I carried an extra classic on me to give to those in need of a good knife but did not know it. One was a young college student who had bought a space heater and was unboxing it in the parking lot of a Home Depot, as his car was already packed to go back to school, and the box was oversize with styrofoam inserts. He was trying to open the box with a key, so I handed him a sak classic to cut the box open. He was amazed at how a small sharp blade made it so easy. I told him to keep the knife and he was blown away. "Wow, like thanks a lot, dude. That's really cool." was his reply. A convert to the cause.

Another classic went to a young lady trying to open a taped shut package by punching holes with a ball point pen. She to couldn't believe how easy the classic opened the package. Like the college student, she did not know she needed a knife for edc til that moment. Another convert.

I gave away all the classics I got for the 2 dollars, several in all.

But if somebody knew they needed a knife, but was looking to bum one instead of spending just 10 dollars for an Opinel, or Mora, or sak classic or bantam or pocket pal, then he's a mooch, and I feel about them the same way I feel about the bums at traffic lights holding the sign saying "Homeless, need money." If they can stand there all day walking back and forth, get a d--m job.

I don't like bum's, mooches, or free loaders. :thumbdn:

great post, jackknife.

anyone want to send me a knife????

I dont know how I would react, probably not unless I had dealings/conversations with the person previously.

I've given quite a few knives to friends or almost friends if I had a spare on me. I recently gave a BM axis lock to an almost friend as he had noticed I had quite a collection and inquired about how much he could buy one for. Now I know the guy well enough to know he doesn't have much discretionary income so I gave him a knife i never much cared for but was a quality piece. Low and behold a few weeks later I here him approach a local knife dealer about "how much would it cost to....". You guessed it. Another free knife. Now I'm much more carefull about who I give my knives too. To mis-quote the heck out of the Bible, "Ask and ye shall not recieve". Strangers? Forget it! My luck it would be Chuck Manson Jr.
