Here's a little thinking scenario.

You are going into the wilderness, events unknown. You have good clothes on as well as boots, but ZERO gear.

You also have a $100 bill. You can buy ANYTHING that fits into your pockets or on your belt, but no packs, pouches, etc.

What things would you buy to help you in the woods?

I'll throw in some plumber's candles 3/$1.00
some of those .25/package crackers or cookies
a couple cans of soda pop/ $1.00,save the cans for a lot of uses.
package of fishing hooks and a small roll of monofiliment / $5.00

My list is as follows:
Compass $10
Strike Anywhere Matches $1
Blue Plastic Tarp 8x10 $5
Storm Whistle $5
Cold Steel SRK $55
550 Para Cord $5
Bottled Water $1
Candles $2
Salt Packets, Suger Packets & Straws (Stolen from McDonalds)
AAA Flashlight $5
Water Purifacation Tabs $4
Wallet Magnyfier $1

Metal match ~$15
Cheap sheath knife ~$20
pocket chainsaw ~$20
Mil. Poncho ~$15
half a dozen cans of condensed soup ~$6
100 ft of 550 cord ~$5
Large Blue tarp ~$5
Roll of Aluminum Foil ~$2
Roll of wire ~$2

These items would give me that ability to produe water and food in almost any environment. I can boil water in the tin cans, as well as collect it from a solar-still made with the blue tarp. A clear one may be better for that use, but a blue one is easier to adapt to other uses and has more durability.

With the knife and saw, I can produce shelter in almost any environment I might end up in, and other environments would produce a very different needs list.

Signaling can be created with natural elements and the tools provided above. Either fires/smoke generators or branches but and laid out in opposite colors.

Nothing is included for travel, but I make the assumption that someone will be looking for me. If you have a different assumption, then add travel gear as appropriate. I intend on waiting for my rescuers.

Stryver, who doesn't actually intend on travelling without a compass...

When we get this stuff it will come in a bag.

Swiss Army Rucksack
Kabar Marine Utility
Metal Match
Red Photon Microlight
200 foot spool nylon decoy cord
Diamond Sharpening rod

Army Canteen with tin cup and carrier _ I would need one BIG pocket for this

Water purification tabs
Whistle
Plastic survival mirror
Suunto Clipper Compass
Candles
2 Space Blankets

I realize the canteen is pushing the spirit of the question if I cant have it I would take a folding cup and several unlubed condoms.
