So a scenerio

You will be spending a week in the woodlands with just some basics. A tarp, a blanket, a canteen and cup, some paracord, fishing pole, and fire starter.

No machete, axe, or saw and you can only have 1 knife. You have to buy that knife and only have $45 to get it. What do you buy.

I'm gonna get rained on but the first thing that comes to my mind for that price is the gerber big rock. It's a good length and width, comes with an ugly but very functional sheath and has a very comfortable handle. I used one for over a year before I had the money to buy anything nicer. It's plenty tough and sharpens easily as well. You should be able to find one for 20-25 dollars easily.

Good luck :)

Five Moras

...or maybe a Condor Bushlore, though I've never handled one of those.

I'm seeing an Ontario Spec Plus Marine Raider Bowie at an online store for $45. I have one of these myself. I'd go with that. I could beg outside a gas station for three more dollars and get the Spec Plus SP8 Survival Machete.

I'd buy a Scandinavian fixed blade knife; Mora, puukko, such knives. The Sami people up there in the north use such knives for centuries now and live in a tough environment.

If I had to do a week long trip like that, I'd choose something like a Leatherman Blast. Of the actual knives listed here, I'd go with the Buck 119 or Nighthawk, or Gerber Camp Rock.
