Buck's only steel upgrade on the Custom 110 is S30V.

It costs an extra $13.50 to get it.

Suppose you could get other steel upgrades for a Custom 110, say D2 or BG42 or 440C or a plain carbon steel or (name your favorite).

How much would you pay to get the steel of your choice on that Custom 110???

Keep in mind that Buck needs a bit of incentive to initiate such a program, so don't go too cheap.

Elmax is a hot steel with some of the other makers like Kershaw and Spyderco. I would love to see some variety in the CS's blade options for the 110. Elmax, D2, S30V, 440C, Carbon Damascus (Snakeriver Knives makes a good barstock) and even 13C26 would be nice additions. I would not hesitate to pay whatever Buck thought was reasonable. Say double or slightly more than the S30V option.

I'd immediately jump on a NS, Ram, D2 110.

I don't know all that much about the new fancy steel's but I would pay $100.00 for a nice 112 in D2...More for a drop point!

I think I would throw an extra 40$ for D2 or BG42... As for the 440C...I've got plenty of those and there doesn't seem to be any shortage on the secondary market:D

Well, the 440C question has a bit more to it.

We theorize (without a lot of evidence) that the 1980-81 440C (at least some of it) may have gotten the Bos Heat Treat.......making those knives (maybe) different from other 440C.

A Buck done today in 440C would have the Bos heat treat for sure........and thus we'd KNOW for sure that they got that heat treat......might be a slightly better 440C?

Also......not a lot of these would be sold. They would be identifiable and unique and probably increase in value far more than many knives......thus a good investment.

So......it's a fascinating idea........

(To me, anyway.)

Yes, all good points, and the blade grind of today might actually let that 440C really show its abilities :)

Buck has already done some 440C knives that had the Boss heat treatment. Here is a 401 LE in 440C

I am not a normal poster over here but I would happily pay double the price of S30V for BG42 in a 110, I think a BG42 blade and paper stone scales may be my dream EDC! (at least this week!)

My feelings exactly with the 440C. Current edge geometry should make a 440C 110 from today's Custom Shop one heck of a knife.

I would drop $40 on a bg-42 or carbon 1095 no problem. Some stores here in Nova Scotia want $79.99 plus tax just for a regular 110 with leather sheath.I like bg-42,s30v,420 hc,440c ,ats34 isn't my favorite just because i've had rust issues with it even after cleaning/oiling,but that could be the finish causing that,i'm not sure.

If you ever want to see a old buck 110 with 440c perform, give it a nice convex edge and you'll see what it can really do.I put a full height convex edge on a 2 dot with 440 c and it was used the whole hunting season in 2008 and not even touched up on a steel.I love the old 440c,another great steel Buck has used on a few knives is the D2,Postfallsidaho sent me a 118 with the d2 blade and charcoal handles,it has become one of my favorite fixed blade bucks ,and it came to me with a wicked factory edge that is still very sharp after lots of use!thanks Jim!

Yeah, I'd say that if S30V costs $13.50 extra I'd easily go an extra $40 for something like BG-42 or 440C or D2.......and why not go for one of the newer steels like INFI?

I think limited runs of such steels could be profitable if Buck would try them.
