Hi,
Just got myself a CR shadowIII. I like this small knife, the only thing is that now I have to do something withthe hollow handle.
Where can I get a good quality small size compass? Also what else would you guys store in it?
Fausto

You can get a small high quality compass made just for the CRK knife at www.tadgear.com

I have a keyring firesteel from http://www.wildernesssurvival.com/Flints.htm and some tinder in my hollow handle. There's also room left over for an Aviation spark lite. If fire's not a big priority for you, some hooks, fishing line, lead sinkers and a couple rubber lures will fit in there as well.

I've also seen people who put comdoms and water purification tablets in their hollow handled knives.

Have fun and see what you can do with yours.

Yep, good choices. You might check out equipped.com for some good ideas on gear and kits that'll work in your new knife. Lots of good gear reviews at their site.

First answer - A handle! With a few exceptions hollow handles are weak.

Second Answer - The things I'm likely to run out of from poor planning or oversight. Water purification tablets and a firemaker come to mind, spare bulb for my flashlight, analgesics, salt, etc. I don't think you should try to fit a comprehensive kit into such a space it just leads to false confidence. What are you using your hollow handled knives for??

I have never heard of a Reeve handle getting broke, or a Parrish for that matter....

If you need a hammer, get a rock...If you need a wedge you can carve one with your blade....than beat it in with a rock or pole...

If you need a spear, you can make one by sharpining a stick, not shoving one into your knife handle...you can barb the stick, and if your wild boar (ala Rambo) runs off with the darn thing you still have your blade...make another.

I carry a cut down sparking rod that I removed from a mag. fire starter, some fishing line, fish hooks and sinkers in a small plastic vial, two large eye heavy duty needles and some tinder Quick-tabs...the needles, tinder, sparking rod, and fishing line are wrapped up in a rubber band so it stays compact and easy to remove...

I have wrapped the sheath with Paracord, and have more cord as a hangman's lanyard on the sheath.

Congrats on your first Chris Reeves, I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do mine.

Pict,
I too belive in "forgetable redundancy". I carry a butane lighter in the pockets of my shirt, pants, and coat. I also carry sone vasaline soaked gauze and a small sparking rod in the handle of my knife.
As for weakness I agree many cheap hollow handle "Rambo" wanta be knives are very weak at the handle junction. However Chris Revees hollow handle knives are "carved" out a solid piece of steel. As such they are as strong or stronger than many full tang knives. If you get the chance to handle one I'm sure you'll be impressed.

Ok I get it CR = Chris Reeve. They are the exception I was thinking about. Your wrist will break before the knife. Mac

Thanks everybody for advice, I was thinking about a fire starter + tinder, a button compass (not too convinced about this one), small ziploc/or condom + water purification pills, some pain killer & antibiotics capsules, a spool of dental floss (strong thread in the smallest package), wire saw?. Where I live/hike fishing equipment is a waste of space/time .When I hike I have a fairly well packed surv. kit + a medical one, a khukri and a smaller knife. This would be more the handle-size equivalent of an altoid kit.
The knife is very well built and I like it a lot, even though ow I feel I should have gone for the next larger one.
Having several Khukri and a huge bowie (himalayan imports AK bowie)somehow makes me buy my other knives in the 3 1/2 to 5" blade range.

Yeah, I think the 3-5" knives are a good choice when supplementing a Khukuri or similarly sized blade. When I carry my Khukuri, I'll also add a Mora 2000 and a Victorinox SAK w/saw.

Unless you're talking about chlorine-based water purification tabs, I'd stay away from putting them in the handle of a knife. Iodine-based tabs are VERY reactive and even a bit of moisture will get them "active" and start corroding the inside of your knife. If you have a tiny glass vial with a really good seal that won't be a concern, but they'll take up a lot of space that way.

Persoanlly I'd make the handle a matchsafe and add a small pouch to the sheath itself to carry a mini-kit. You'lll be able to get a larger, more comprehensive kit that way, and since it's attached to the sheath, it'll be there any time you're wearing the knife. In fact, I feel it's a better idea to keep your kit on the sheath as opposed to inside the knife. After all, if you drop the knife you'd lose your knife AND all your goodies. But if the kit is on your sheath (with an SAK as a back-up tool blade in there as well), you've "only" lost your knife, not everything.

Besides, you just can't realistically carry enough in a hollow handle to make much of a difference. But as a match safe it's great; you can carry 20 or 25 strike-anywhere matches in a water tight container.

The water purification method I use in all my mini kits is potassium permanganate. Here in Brazil they sell it in a thin foil 10 pack. Each section of the foil flat holds about a gram of the stuff and is as thin as a credit card. I have one of these foil sections duct taped inside the pouch of each of my US Army canteens. I also have one under the rubber sleeve on the sheath of my survival knife.

Potassium permanganate can be tricky to use but it is very easy to store long term. Mac

Fire stuff. With fire, you can make about anything else, and purify water. I'd also put a WSI keyring flint and steel in there, with some fishing line or dental floss. I snare could be put in there as well.
