The other day a buddy and i were talking about survival scenerios and what we would do in a last minute shtf situation that for whatever reason we were unprepaired for at the time. Lets say power sources are down, no long distance communication, its nightfall, rioting begins to spread throughout the city, nothing pre packed, and you got 5 mins to get humpin. You can only grab afew things or your takin whats already on you, keep it simple. Its also a mild season in your particular area of the country so your not too worried at this point about cold weather. To make it interesting lets say its starting out in an urban setting but well eventually lead into a wilderness area as you try to distance yourself further and further from the city. Try and actually do this off the top of your head, what im wanting is to see what peoples priorities are in a unplanned scenerio, dont make it complicated, there isnt time. GO!!!

Most folks here probably have bug out bags and plans at the ready, but if not, this is what I'd grab real quick.
.45 pistol
.22 pistol
Hatchet
couple flashlights
small radio
As many of my knives as I could grab at one time.
As much water as I could carry
All the dry and canned food I could carry
Matched, lighter, metal match
sleeping bag
tent
clothes (My outdoor clothes are all in one box)
first aid kit
I'd throw it all in my pack, then load up my Jeep with whatever else I could and go.

If the only problem in this senario is power outages and some rioting and looting, you would be better off to stay put, where all your supplies are, you go out in it your much more likely to be in danger.

Unless your house is directly threatened, just stay low profile and wait until the power comes back.

Very true, but I have also thought of the more romanticized "head to the hills" scenario. Something along the lines of Red Dawn come to mind :) (It would take something VERY serious for my wife to agree to head out of town!)

For the most part I agree with Tknife;
Exceptions;
Svensaw, I don't own a hatchet, never had a use for one. (I have a svensaw already attached to the pack and another in the Jeep)
batteries (on the shelf)
a brick of 22 ammo, (Its on the shelf waiting, next to the batteries)
the water filter that resides in my pack.
If I had 10 minutes I would load the 15 gallons of stabilized gasolene into the Jeep too
(Actual time to pack for a full fleged camping trip (with all of the stuff that I normally take) = 23 minutes from a standing start to leaving the driveway)
Enjoy!

Cash.
Credit cards
Checks
Any available spare gasoline,

I would say the standard fare as everyone else, but also a good pot for boiling water and cooking.

wsk, and .45 semi auto pistol, and a mosin nagant 91/30 w/ scope, or if i ever get it my 03 a3 w/ scope. my wsk sheath has a pocket for all of the wilderness suvival needs, so that isnt a problem.the one thing is i havent had the wsk blade HTed yet, so i would have to take a knife and hatchet if it wasnt done by the time this happened. in that case id prolly take my trade hatchet and a mora.

As the Last Confederate said, I'd stay put if possible. If it's NOT possible:

Major caliber handgun (2)
.22 rifle (1)
M1 Garand (2)
Ammo for the above (lots)
Filled Water Containers (3 @ 7gal ea)
British Imperial Water Filter
MREs - 2 cases
AM/FM/SW Radio
GPS
Flashlights (several)
Batteries
Axe
Knives
Sleeping Bags (2)
Tarp
My Go Bag
Gas can and syphon
Wallet with cash, cards, etc.
Pre-existing contents of my truck, already set up for evenings out.
Whatever else I could squeeze in for comfort (clothes, etc.)

But I don't think I could get it done in 5 minutes - it'd take me 10 - 15.

Nothing packed? Wow, I'd have to walk over at least 4 kits to get out the door. :D Ok, I'd grab:

12ga. with ammo
spark-lite firestarter kit
canteen pouch/canteen/cup/chem. treatment
25' 7 strand parachute shroud line
Becker BK-7
USMC poncho
small ruck

On me:

Belt pouch with SAK, BSA Hotspark & compass match tube with small food kit (hooks, shot & line)
LED light
P38
whistle
Gloves

For a natural disaster I would stay at home.

For a “Red Dawn” scene... Dad and I would stash the guns somewhere and hole up at home. Join/form the underground at first chance.

I wouldn’t head for the hills; I fight from within, and help the local “Mountain Men” :)

BTW, GREAT topic. It really helps you understand yourself by asking these “what if“ questions.

Yea the "head to the hills" "Red Dawn" scenerio that tknife mentioned is what i was thinking of. Although I did like the "fight from within and help the local mountain men" answer that Clint gave LOL Thanks for the great replys guys! :D

If I were at home, I would hunker down with my wife and our dog and cat, and wait until the fuss dies down.

If I were not at home, I would take what I thought I could carry under the circumstances, and go home. I would go home via any means necessary. By car or by foot. Drive as far as I could, beach the vehicle, then walk the rest of the way.

For me, the goal would be to get home and stay there.

Whatever you carry it better be good if you intend to leave the city for the country. In your scenario you will be headed my way  . Bring cash and lots of stuff I can use. Maybe I'll let you fort up here....after I've neutralized you and found out you are a fellow forumite.
Personally, I'll stay put and watch the white glow of distant cities turn yellow by night and watch the smoke columns by day.

You do realize the hills are filled with people like me trying to keep city/urban folks out? ;)

Hehe! I can understand that ;) I would do the same. I'm lucky in the fact that I can get to some heavy woods within an hours drive, or maybe half a days walk. There's a stream with fish in it and plenty of places to hide out. I could live there for a good long while if I had to.

Grab my bag my family and just go. I would love to see just how many people really make it in this shtf thing. Truly. I spend every spare moment I can in the woods. Always have since I was a boy. I do it not because I have some parinoid idea that bad things are going to happen(even though it will) I do it because I love doing it. Call me crazy but I read an article the other day about being an armchair survivalist. I wonder how many of us here are just that. Buying that knife because it looks like it would do the job and never really getting out and doing something. Packing things in our closet and saying hey, I'm ready just is not the way to survive anything including life I think. I am not rying to offend anyone and I hope that what I am sayin here makes sence and we all take a look at what it is we are really going to do when it does in fact go pow in our face and we are faced with what do I do now. These scenerio's that we love to take part in are great but how will you start a fire with that new firestarter if you have never used one before? How will you build a shelter to hold up in some not so nice weather if you have never done it before? I guess what I am sayin is get out there and just do it don't sit here and type what looks good and hope for the best because when the SHTF I don't want to be the one who has to wipe the sh** off my face because I don't knoiw what to do. Just my rant for the day take it for what it is worth.

An obvious traveler, will be considered a potential danger and is most definitely an easy target, for those that would do you and your family harm. The best thing you can do is arm yourself with knowledge of not only how to light a fire or build a shelter, but how to hide them or how to survive without those items while you're traveling. Having the sense to keep a low profile and travel as a hunter stalks, will go a long way to keeping you and your loved ones safe.

I have a BOB setup in my car. And it includes a gun, shovel, knives, and all the standard gear. Beyond that...I would immediately go pick up some trail mix, water, spare gas, and any other food that I can get.

I have been on quite a few survival retreats. 1-2 weeks at a time. The biggest problem that always gets me...boredom. So, I pack a couple of books, a Grundig emergency radio, and a deck of cards. All 3 of these can be thrown in your bag or car very fast.

If I couldn't get to my car...I would make my way to a Walmart as fast as possible and pick up what I need from there. Break in if you need to. Fortunately I keep the desired gear in my Versipack Fatboy.

A nice big backpack, gun, ammo, some quick food, and any other gear I could get fast.
