What year did Schrade start making their knives in China?

Not sure of the exact year, although I'm thinking 2006. Previous to that there were some knives made by Camillus for Taylor brands that were on sale before the Chinese knives made their apperance.

Thats an interesting question.

Schrade like most knife companies started importing parts, boxes and other pieces to make their knives in the 1990's.
By the close in 2004 there were many. After the close it took a very short amount of time for the new owner to get most of the lines that were made in the USA covered by China manufacturers.

My final jeopardy answer would be that SCHRADE never made their knives in China.
They closed, or some may say forced out, in 2004 and the name rights were purchased
by Taylor brands at auction.
Then Taylor LLC had knives made in China and used the purchased name brands on them.
Which quickly grew the moniker of 'Schraylors' to differentiate them from the pre 2004
genUwine Schrade USA models.
Now I could be wrong. It has happened before.
Four times already this year and it's not even December yet.

The first Chinese produced TBLLC "Schrade" I accidently bought was produced in 2005, and bears an etch with that date. Yes, Imperial Schrade did import some components (and packaging too, I think) before they bit the dust, but I cannot recall and knives made entirely in China. Some kitchen and table cutlery was made earlier in Japan, Taiwan and a few other Pacific Rim locations. Baer was an early proponent of opening trade with Japan and made friends in the cutlery industry there. But after the Providence, R.I. factory was closed, most of their "cheap" products were made in the former Jowika factory in Listowel Ireland (before it was closed prior to ISC bankruptcy).

You are right about the packaging.

Codger is the man! If he says so then it is so! Thanks again Codger for all your hard work on our behalf! Cheers! D.

The Tradesman and Apex lines which were formerly produced by Schrades Ireland plant were manufactured in China prior to 2004. The "super knife" was also produced and packaged in China (Rework was in the U.S.) More and more components were being sourced there, primarily molded, machined and cast parts.

I also seem to recall having a couple of the Schrade Badger knives, pre 2004, that were made in China as well. I believe they even had China stamped or etched on the blade.

Rick,
I remember the discussions re the Badgers back in 04. I believe your are correct.

...and I can confirm that they rusted just as badly as the Taylor Schrade muck..as I had both in my fishing kreel....the Chinese definately produce the best Stainless STEAL......
