are there restrictions regarding knife length or purpose of knife? (ie large fixed blade) in a park such as yellow stone or glacier national?

I was in Yellowstone last June and don't recall any specific knife regulations. I carried a Mora, sheathed, on my belt half in my pocket almost all the time, never had any problems with any rangers or in the camp store. In fact, the camp store sold knives, including some Kershaws and Bucks. Nobody seemed concerned with my use of a machete to split firewood.

I believe they have a generic "no weapons" policy (as most national parks seem to have) that seemed to mean more "no loaded firearms" than "no knife". I don't recall the specifics of the policy, however.

up here in bc, canada i've seen plenty of ppl carry big fixed blades in national parks with no carry size restrictions. rule of thumb use it when u have to other wise keep it away. declare it as a tool, never for self defence. and if you plan to travel to a more urban area then put it away. i've been asked by store owners and local pd to put my knife away when walking but when i come across park rangers, half of them say "cool knife" and walk off.

=) btw by big knife i mean kershaw outcast D2 or ColdSteel Military Classic R1.

cheerio

i imagine it would depend entirely on what state you were in, whether federal or state land, etc.
