I wanted to get a tally of the 3-5 most common activities you use your knife for when outdoors either for an afternoon or for several days...minse would probably be
1) gen utility (Encompasses the others I suppose, but illustrates gen hadiness)
2)food prep
3)quick cuts (cord bits of fabric, fishing string etc)
4)fire side whittling... fuzz sticks included
5) fish and small game prep

personally I never split or chop or batton with a knife in the field, but have done all to test blades and to develo pthe skill...I don't think that there is anything wrong with doing those things...it's just not my cup of tea...lets hear about you.

You really have hit about everything I do with my knives, I do some log splitting/kindling with my larger blades. Field dressing etc Other than that you covered it.

1-4 definitely on every trip. 4 is definitely part of what I love about camping, there's nothing more relaxing. 5 sometimes, depends on where I am and if it's legal.

All of the above, plus chopping and splitting, for shelter and fire. Occasionally, pounding tent pegs. I agree that #4 is a big reason to go camping!

I also spend a fair amount of time outdoors "testing" them. And whittling. And taking pics of them stuck in stumps. And trying to stuff more gear in the sheath-pockets than was meant to go there, when applicable. The little woman says I'm playing, but we all know better, right? :D

In the field? Shall we assume I have my machete?

1) Gathering/preparing tinter and kindling
2) Gathering fuel wood
3) whittling
4) on a good day cleaning fishes

Definitely 1-4. Maybe I'll abuse it (pounding things and using it to pry small twigs into 2 pieces) but rarely if ever. Shelter prep too

Slicing and dicing. Notching and whittling. Shaving and scraping. Poking and prodding. Sometimes I even use one to hold my food while I eat.:D

In the bush:

1) Genereal wittling and food prep
2) Clearing trails
3) Splitting and cutting fire wood
4) Cutting poles and materials for shelters

In order of frequency:

cutting paracord, etc. to rig tarps and rain flies

food prep

preparing kindling

You folks forgot the most important one: MAKES ME FEEL MANLY!!!!!!!!!
PRIMAL, UUGGHHH. Come on, tell the truth.......
The women get all pissy when you drag em around by the hair these days so we are left to our tools. Knife dont care!

This is normally the only thing I do with my knives... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=457279

And splitting wood for fire.

(Smaller knives for food prep and sharpening cooking sticks, etc. Tinder. Big knives for chopping, of course)

I saw those pix of your before and never commented. Awesome work my man!

I plan on making a similar shelter when it warms up a little w/ my new Dogfather (I don't think I'll be emotionally stable enough to use my CGFBM by then, as its my only INFI! Poor safe queen!) and I'll be using your pix as a reference! Thanks JurT

Pruning in the orchard
Food preparation
Cutting twine
Sometimes having to threaten a neighbour's dog....hope I don't have to use it!

Number one knife jobs for me is fire prep, building, maintaining, and whittling by it. (With bigger chopping done with a Wetterling hatchet)
The knives are there if I need to build a shelter, or cut food, but usually (but not always)food prep is done prior to leaving the house, and on long trips I mostly carry dehydrated food....
The remaining duties are general camp work.
I really like building spits, and tripods for cooking over the fire. Nothing like a campfire with a chicken roasting and a perk hanging over the fire. Maybe a char on a stick as well......

The real kicker is carrying a different knife for the different jobs. I often have a fillet knife, something to cut up food, something to chop and shape wood, and some smaller whittling knives. I don't always use them all, even if I do all of the chores listed, but I still have them.

My newest knife purchase was a Lueku/Puuko set from Kellam, and I am going to try taking it as my only fixed blades on my next few trips, if I can resist the urge to take a few spares... Together they can handle anything.

Regards

Jim

I've been thinking I might e able to get by with a smaller neck knife a sak and a chopper (axe or machete) The neck knife is so eaeily accessable when hiking and does most of what I'd need.. and the smaller size makes it sheeple friendly as it'll be my prime user...We'll see how it works out.

JurT, great shelter! Looks warm and insulated.

Add to my uses fabricating wooden things.
Tent pegs, sticks for cooking grub over the fire, the wooden framework next to/over the fire for holding a pot, even making a rustic chair. etc etc etc.

Call it wittling with a purpose, although I do enjoy wittling for nothing more than the sheer joy of making lots of little pieces of kindling.

With bigger knives, like roughing a large piece of wood into a totem, of sorts, with faces and such.

food prep
repairs-- trimming clothing, line, etc.
grooming (sak scissors mostly)
making spare tent pegs and other wood working
survival preparedness
self defense preparedness
nite-nite cuddly --- c'mon guys, it's DARK outside!
