I've been lurking in this forum for a couple weeks, reading and doing searches to help me come up with a basic kit for beating exposure for 24 to 48 hours. I'd like to ask for your help in evaluating what I put together. The kit is stored in an air tight, waterproof hard polymer container 4 3/4" L x 3 7/8" W x 2" H. It's supplemented with my Spyderco Military, my SAK Cadet, and a GI 20 oz. Pilot's Flask, all of which fit very neatly into a very small fanny pack or in most of my jacket pockets. It can be seen at <a href="http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1303947&a=9676843">

That's a pretty cool kit, especially for its size. Mine is a little bigger with a few additions:

gauze pads, medical tape and a compress. For when the cut is too big for those little bandages.

20' parachute cord and a plastic tube tent. Not necessary but it makes building a quick shelter just a little easier.

Some small food items. Chocolate, sport energy bar, salt.

This may make you kit bigger than you want but I like to have all the advantage I can get

Sgtmike,

The kit looks good -- you may have more blades than you need since they are of similar type, but they are good blades nonetheless. Not sure of the components on a Cadet SAK, but a locking blade, saw, and awl (for drilling holes in wood) can make the difference between ease of your experience and more hardship. Also, would suggest Polar-Pure iodine crystals rather than tablets -- tablets can become ineffective once opened, and crystals will last longer in the airtight bottle that comes with the Polar-pure. The Polar-pure will also purify around 2000 gallons of water with just one bottle -- in case your 24-48 hours becaomes a longer stay in the wilderness.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Brian.

Thanks for the help gents! So far, here's the changes:

1. Added 20' of #18 Orange Braided Nylon
Mason's line,
2. Was able to slip in (1) pocket poncho by
Coghlan's,
3. Fit in (1) Metal match (found in my old
Boy Scout pack),and
4. Updated the med supplies.

I'll look at other SAK's and look for the polar pure crystals asap. Keep the suggestions coming!

Thanks, Mike

Hmm..318 hits on my pics and only two comments. Guess my photography needs some more work too.

I also carry two of the foil coated mylar "space" blankets. They make great reflectors with a fire. You can tie them up and put a small fire and yourself between them and stay toasty warm. The downside is you will have trouble sleeping with all the light they throw off!
