This was talked about a while back. Now that the page has been redesigned, any hopes of bringing an survival/outdoors/or even Y2K forum here?

I'd like to see that as well.

The offer is open to Jeff, but he said that he'd have to wait until the beginning of November before he could make any decisions due to his class schedules.

We'd also like to see Dr. Ron Hood as a Moderator for that forum. Heck, since we can have 4, we're open to suggestions as well.

I would like to see a survival category on this site very much. There are a couple survival forums on the web, but I like the format of this forum, and people seem to comport themselves better here than on other forums. I vote yes.

In my perfect world they would be able to maintain their own sites, utilizing common software that could seamlessly hook into this site. So they would appear as sites here but they would run the software elsewhere. That way they could maintain control over their forums, so if there was a technical or social problem they could go on running. The downside would be related to advertising and such, but this could be worked out with cooperative agreements, perhaps based on traffic. I think seamless hyperlinks would be a great improvement. I don’t suppose there is anything available now that could do that?

Pleconin: Nope, not going to happen, not in this format.

Whoa, I feel really dumb. All this time I was under the impression that Dr. Ron Hood and Jeff Randall are the same man.

Dr. Hood the UCSC professor and Randall his alter ego in the jungle.

Sorta like Dr. Henry Jones Jr. and Indiana.

Yes. I' d like to see a survival/ Y2K forum as well. Why go to so many different forums when we can have most here?... Because it just adds to already so much time spent here!

Over in Community people started kicking around an "outdoors" forum, a little different from "survival" because a somewhat broader range of topics would still be on-topic.

That might work well. There's a fine balance between designing an "overloaded" forum from the get-go and one that resembles a tundra.

"Outdoors" could cover:

Any wilderness knife use;
Backpacking including non-knife gear;
rock climbing;
canoes/kayaks;
long-haul or mountain biking;
maybe even some scuba-related threads;
etc?

This could be a broad enough interest range to build up a good forum. There'd be a LOT of "cross-interest".

Simply Survival just went live using the same software as here.

Perhaps a revision or two from now we could get a seemless cross link going... Or perhaps you could get Doug at equipped in a cross link deal and have him move his BBS here. His current software is pretty weak.

Pleconin,

That link didn't work. I tried looking around the site and I don't see a BB anywhere.

I don't know what the deal was. My first two attempts got me nothing. I can click on it now and get the BB. Thanks for the link.

Yes, I would like to see a survival forum.

Would it have to be about "cutlery" only or are you suggesting a wider scope for the forum ??

Survival Forum: EXCELLENT IDEA! Then many of the topics like survival knives can be more easily found!

I vote: Yes!

When I said survival forum, it was with the thought of outdoor survival, like say, "how to stay alive, what items to put in a 72 hour survival pack, key items in a crisis or emergency"...and so on
