I always thought they were a bit expensive and strange looking, but they got good reviews. It seems that some of the DarkOps knives look similar.Did they just change the name of the company?

I think they are still around from what I understand. And no, they are not the same as Dark Ops. From what I understand, Dark Ops ripped off their designs. I have read on the forums that the guy who started dark ops used to be associated with or employed by extreme ratio.

I don't think that the current Extrema Ratio knives and the Dark Ops knives look similar. The Extrema Ratio designs look far more usable.

Dark Ops was started by the man who was Extrema Ratio's representative in the US. They parted under acrimonious circumstances and Dark Ops began with modified ER products.

Both companies have since introduced other designs, especially ER. Since their first US venture ended badly, I'm not surprised they stick primarily to European sales. But they are available in the US, just not heavily adverised.

Like so many knife companies, Extrema Ratio has made a big impression with military sales.
Their Bayonet is now officially part of the French Army's FELIN next generation soldier program.
It pairs up nicely with the FAMAS rifle.

At least for the DO I have, the blade is nearly identical and made from the same steel as it's ER "cousin". Clearly, DO modified the handle design and incorporates a slightly different glass breaker. The overall dimensions of the two knives appear to be identical. Both have the same back-lock and cross-bolt systems. However, the MPC costs about 50% more than the DO. (The price on the site, below, is fairly high - I've seen the MPC advertised for around $300. The DO goes for about $200).

Whatever happened to Extrema Ratio?

As far as I know they are still going strong.

As for Dark Ops : they may be cheaper, but they stole the designs of ER and "mallninjafied" them. They are now the best knives in the world to take out terrorists.

So if you don't mind I'll keep my ER knives and ignore the Dark Ops thingies.

Kind regards,

Jos

I don't think anyone is trying to talk you out of ER knives. But, they both seem to have some "extreme" designs. In fact, the DO I have is rather tame compared to some models from both brand lines. I would think that some of the ER qualify as "thingies", as well.

One thing about DO's advertising, though - it has certainly been memorable. Don't you just hate it when that happens?

I have a Little Extrema Ratio Shrapnel I got here in the Exchange and it is one tough SOB! I will get one of their Folders some day!!!!

Extrema Ratio appears to be going strong here in Europe, it's a pity they couldn't last on the other side of the Atlantic. You can check their full line here:
http://www.extremaratioknivesdivision.eu/inglese/military_police_emergency.htm

Some online stores that carry ER are:
http://www.heinnie.com/
http://www.coltelleriacollini.it/
these Italians also have a few videos on Youtube where you can get a feeling of the knife.

ER prices are pretty steep but you do get a lot of steel for that. I have their BF2 model which is classified by ER as a "light folder".... Actually, it is a huge piece of metal comparable with a Spyderco Manix or BM Rukus. Now this is "light" for ER, their other models are more serious... :-)

The Fulcrum II Tanto and Drop appear to be the equivalents of the DO Stratofighter Covert models.

Where do you buy your ER knives? I found one site but man those knives are expensive...someone somewhere has to have some better prices. the 185 Deg. RAO is like $360 knife...a bit pricey, but an awesome looking knife.

Without reviving this thread too strongly, I have a comment on Extrema Ratio knives.

I have one of their bayonets, it fits my mil-spec AR-15 perfectly, though the long edge up is a bit unusual, I dare say it compromises nothing. The sheath is very substantial.

I like the obvious quality of the knife. I have a number of US military bayonets and can say that all are of inferior quality to the ER bayonet. The only one that comes close is the US Marine Corps OKC3, a very good knife, but still not solid quality. Of course, the OKC3 only sells for about $120.00, while the ER bayonet may run as much as $400.00+.

Extrema Ratio knives are sold regularly on eBay and in a number of European knife outlets that take Paypal.

Bottom line, if you want one, they're readily available.

I don't think Extrema Ratio has ever been a "mainstream" company but they have a pretty devout following.

You actually bought a Dork Ops? Their advertisement alone gave me the "stay far away" signal.
